Doctor Who - The End of Tennant

edited January 2010 in General Chat
So, who saw it? Who thought it was way better then the first part? Who can't wait to see Matt Smith in action? Who was disappointed there wasn't a preview of the next series?

Me!

And you guys as well, I guess. But mostly me.

    Series Preview - http://www.bbc.co.uk/doctorwho/s4/characters/doctor11

I have to admit I'll miss David Tennant, thought he was epic as The Doctor. Not seen Matt Smith in anything so I can't really compare. I just hope he manages to continue on the glory.

Ending was really well done, very sad. Although I wtf'd at Martha Jones and Mickey? Did they get together in that Waters on Mars episode that I missed or something?
  • edited January 2010
I'm thinking that was just playful banter. I hope.

Should just point out that the preview (this one) is for UK residents only, but it's only a matter of time before someone puts it on YouTube.

The actual story was utterly rubbish. The whole Time Lord returning stuff with Timothy Dalton was just under-used and under-developed. Dalton just stepped out a white light, got hit by lightening and went back into the light. They could have done so much more with him and that part of the storyline. The preceding episode was one of the few I thought was absolutely terrible. That said, how they went about it from the point from where it was clear he was dying, that last 20 minutes, was very well done.
  • edited January 2010
The thing to note with Mr Dalton is that:
Timothy Dalton was, in fact, playing Rassilon, a Time Lord gone very, very bad and/or mad. Which makes the whole 'I will not die' aspect much more meaningful. It's great if you happen to be a die-hard Doctor Who fan who actually knows who Rassilon is, but otherwise it's just another line.
But the ending, in which the Master took his (kinda deserved) revenge upon Rassilon for putting the drumming into his head which drove him so very, very mad, was a nice way for John Simm to end his story - this time, anyway. He's not dead, just on Gallifrey with the rest of the Time Lords. So he can come back at some point. Huzzah.

And Rassilon didn't just step out of a white light - he brought the whole planet of Gallifrey into orbit around Earth. There's not an awful lot more he could have done, from an acting standpoint.

I have to say, that was quite spectacular. And i feel it was about the right time for Tennant to leave. It was his 47th episode, afterall. That trailer seems to show that they are going down a more mature direction with the series, which i believe is for the best. Especially with moffat at the helm (writer of the empty child/the doctor dances, the girl in the fireplace, Blink, and silence in the library/forest of the dead)

Also, as a side note, does anyone else think they were trying to relaunch torchwood with Mickey&Martha? And i thought Martha was married...

Confidential was also pretty awesome. Tennant gets all emotional at the end of his last day (aww), and there's a nice montage of moments from the past few series.

Mature? I'm sorry, I didn't notice with all the running and the Geronimo and that final line that should never actually be said by THE Doctor. Don't get me wrong, it looks good, but more mature? Hmm.

And as I said earlier, I'm hoping the Martha/Mickey thing was just playful banter. If not, then Martha's divorced a very disappointed Doctor...

Doctor+ Gun (yes i know he had one in this episode, but he was very reluctant for it), Vampires, He punched one man, and hit the dalek with something, plus the angels are back. Maybe mature was the wrong word.

Anyway, MS reminds me a little of Pertwee's Doctor.

Not at all sure what to make of the series so far. I'd urge people to stay away from the Wikipedia page for Series Five, ruddy great spoilers there. But having read what I have, I'd say it does seem interesting.

We've not seen an awful lot of MS, so I'll wait for more before making a proper opinion. But so far, he seems more a cross between Pertwee and Tennant. But there we go.

i think a good way to start Matt Smiths series would be to make a proper doctor who game. Also they should do LEGO Doctor Who. Think. The LEGO levels could be ones for each Doctor.

This idea is made of win. I think I want this even more than I want a Telltale Futurama series.

Just give us LEGO Doctor Who and I won't even talk about Telltale Doctor Who.

    I can imagine it already:

Lego Doctor Who: The New Blocks! Chronicling the new series, from Rose to the End of Time!

Imagine the Master race being born! Freaking hilarious!
  • edited January 2010
The spinning heads might be intentionally funny that way!

And what about Lego Doctor Who: The Classic Blocks - a series of three games (one for Docs 1,2 and 3, another for 4 and 5, and a third for 6, 7 and 8) based upon the classic series. Oh, I can already see Genesis of the Daleks being 'bricked' in my head...

Someone petition the BBC and Travellers Tales to do it already!

you could play as the master on the evil side like lego batman had good and evil side

No no no, you haven't thought this through. You have five chapters, one for each series and another for the specials at the end of Tennant's reign, and you take the best stories from each series and use them as individual levels.

So for Series One, you'd have, say, 6 or 7 levels - in Rose, The End of the World, Aliens in London, Dalek, The Empty Child and The Parting of the Ways you'd play as Eccleston, and in The Christmas Invasion you'd play as Tennant in Eccleston's outfit.*

Series Two, you'd have New Earth, School Reunion, The Girl in the Fireplace, Rise of the Cybermen, The Satan Pit, Doomsday and The Runaway Bride.

Series Three, Smith and Jones, The Shakespeare Code, Evolution of the Daleks, Human Nature/The Family of Blood**, The Sounds of Drums and Last of the Time Lords (two levels***), along with Voyage of the Damned.

Series Four, Partners in Crime, Planet of the Ood, The Sontaran Strategem, The Doctor's Daughter, The Unicorn and the Wasp, Silence in the Library and Journey's End.

The Specials would be The Next Doctor, Planet of the Dead, The Waters of Mars, The End of Time (Part One) and The End of Time (Part Two). Possibly Dreamland as well, but that's debatable.

And, naturally, the hub through which you can access all of these chapters and levels would be the TARDIS.

*The cutscene would have Eccleston's Doctor trying to regenerate, but not being able to do it, so instead he just takes his hairpiece off and swaps it for Tennant's. Genius!
**I prefer the second name, to avoid confusion with the book also called Human Nature, which these episodes are based on.
***You play the Doctor in the first level trying to stop the Master, and Martha in the second level trying to rescue the Doctor.

    what about the classic series?

Meh, I have never watched an episode of Doctor Who because it looks shit.

But, Matt Smith is a cracking actor.
In the UK he played Jim Taylor in 'The Shadow in the North' and 'The Ruby in the Smoke'; the BBC's adaptations of Phillip Pullman's first two Sally Lockhart books.

    Yeah!

She was, playing the lead character. I'm almost positive that they've shared background actors as well, so it's a veritable bonanza of interdimensional cross-overs!
    what about the classic series?
I quote myself for the answer to this:

If you want, I can go into detail on these as well, but that might be a wee bit too geeky, even for this place.

I want to start an online pole on telltale were people can say if LEGO Doctor Who is a good idea. If hundreds or millions of people say yes it is a good idea then i could send a letter to BBC, LEGO and Travellers Tales with the amount of people who said yes on it and see if they think it is a good idea.

In the meantime please keep suggesting ideas for the game.

Unfortunatley, Petitions never work. And you'd get much better luck making it on the Travellers tales website. I doubt they would make it though. Limited marketability in the States. It may be popular, but nowhere near as popular as Harry potter/Starwars/Indianna jones/batman.

OT: Am i the only one who can't stop watching the regeneration repeatedly?

I thought the plot was really weird. I think the ending part was great though. Tennant was the best doctor yet. I should also mention that American's like me can view the trailer for the new season here on BBC America's website: http://www.bbcamerica.com/content/123/doctor-who-video.jsp?bclid=59272646001&bctid=59919891001

Liked tennant a lot. Really one of the more identifiable docors, since he was so, well, human I suppose.

For me however the best character(s) of the recent reincarnation are the cybermen. Still dislike their treatment as the Daleks whipping horse.

*sniffle* I miss you my monstrous metal masters.

Just rewatched it, and i have to say, it really felt like the end of an era. All his companions were wrapped up, and all his new enemies made an appearance in the mos eisely jacks cantina.

Who's to say the Cybermen are gone? They may crop up again at some point. On the plus side, this year we have
Daleks in World War 2, Silurians, Sea Devils and Weeping Angels
to look forward to. Aren't we lucky?

And since someone asked for it...

We need LEGO Doctor Who!!! At the moment we know that the next LEGO game is LEGO Harry Potter Years 1-4. During the gap before another LEGO Harry Potter LEGO have to make a LEGO Doctor Who game!!! It is soooooooooooo obvious that people want a LEGO Doctor Who game. Besides previous Doctor Who games have been terrible (in my opinion). And it can make Doctor Who even better than it is.

There's only one thing. Can someone send ideas of LEGO Dalek. I cant think of one. In the meantime here are 2 pictures of Doctor Who LEGO i found.

Wow, that cyberman is pretty awesome.

@darth Marsden: I always thought there was the possibility for New Earth to be revealed as Mondas (home of the real cybermen), which was essentially a twin earth (just like NE).

You're forgetting that Earth having a twin planet called Mondas which just happened to have humans on it as well and somehow drifted off into the furthest reaches of space is a really stupid idea.

Besides, I'm pretty sure 'New Earth' was just a standard planet that was terraformed after people got nostalgic for an Earth-like planet once Earth itself got frazzled. I think. I'm not digging my DVD boxset out just to confirm that!

Also: Lego Daleks. Just glue those small buttons onto the sides like this, and you're away.

EDIT: Here, you can make your own Cyberman as well.

Mondas did exist in doctor who mythology. And it was a barren wasteland, just as the humans discovered New earth.
click here I think it would be possible to link the two very easily. Afterall, continents shift (and humans shifted them back again with earth).

I didn't say Mondas never existed, just that it was a silly idea, which I stand by. Also, I believe Mondas was destroyed at the end of The Tenth Planet, so it couldn't have been used as a New Earth.

And now, for no other reason than that I've had a really bad day and need something to cheer me up...
