Comic-Con 2010

edited January 2010 in General Chat
Just to let everyone know, I will once again be attending Comic-Con this year. I just barely managed to snag myself a pass for Friday, July 23rd before it completely sold out today. Following that, I tried to register a friend, but it would not let me. I am surprised how fast these are selling out this year. In past years, I was able to wait until April before I registered.

Is anyone else going this year?

I have been pretty good about taking and posting pictures in past years. Although, they were usually focused on Telltale. I should really try to come back with a less biased view on Comic-Con this year.

I may also be there on Thursday, July 22nd. I am still trying to talk a friend into going, and may split the cost of a hotel in San Diego in order to stick around for an extra day. However, this year, I would like to explore San Diego beyond the convention center.

Ugh! I wish I could go! :( Budget restrictions are my biggest obstacle at this point.

I hope that whoever is going has an awesome time. I'll be looking forward to seeing the pics you guys take :D

Hmm... comic con. In your opinion (whoever wants to reply) is it worth it for me to go to comic con? I live in canada, so it's a little far away.

I've done that twice so far, and really haven't found anything all that exciting. I went to the San Diego Zoo & didn't find it all that great. Legoland is absolutely not worth any time (really lame rides, and very expensive).

However, if you insist going up that way, I suggest you hop on the MTS system. I looked into the costs of a taxi, and it simply wasn't worth it.

(MTS is different from the trolley service, but the trolley does have a stop on the MTS route.)

As a native San Diegan, I will partially agree with Kevin. San Diego isn't exciting like New York or SF. It's beautiful and great for hitting the beach or checking out great parks and attractions (the zoo is in Balboa Park, a huge urban park with about 20 other museums and there's also Sea World). Legoland, as cool as the idea was, is geared towards kids under 10 so unless you've got some, or are a giant Lego nut, it's not worth the expense (it's not cheap and it's also 40 miles from the center of town, would require a rental car).

During comic-con, however, downtown is nuts and there's constantly geeky stuff going on in and around the con. It's also a complete madhouse so if you're not comfortable with large crowds you'll go insane.

If you do go, you'll want a hotel in the valley, near the trolley. That's the preferred transport method to the convention center so they extend hours and add trips to make getting there easy. It also goes right by Balboa Park and into the heart of downtown (and also, to the US/Mexico border but that's not advised) so you can just get a day pass and go wherever you want.

If you have others questions I'd be happy to answer them.

I'd consider going to Comic-Con if I didn't live on the wrong side of the country. It probably costs a fortune just to get a pass, too, right?

I don't go to comic cons, I save my self for the big things! Like The E3! everything on Games! What could be better?

Comic-con IS a big thing. And for me, "big" means "more people-friendly" when it comes to expos.

E3 isnt open to the general public anymore, it's just for developers, media, etc.

I would go too but it's even more cost prohibitive living in another country!

You know... there is.. kind of a friggin' OCEAN and who-knows-how-many-different-types-of civilizations between me and US.

$35 for a day pass Thursday - Saturday, $20 for only Sunday. If you get in early, you can also get a Wednesday-Sunday pass. Of course, its gotten crazy getting the pass these days.

They were entirely sold out on Saturday by the end of the week, right after they were made available.

I'm in Vermont, and I've been going since 2006, and it does take a big bite out of the budget. Air travel is usually the least expensive thing you need to worry about, finding a place to stay is the pricey bit. Even if you can get booking via the Comic-Con website, you will be spending a bit if you stay for the entire thing.

Currently PAX is my con of choice. On the one hand, the spectacle of Comicon was certainly interesting, but there were just SO MANY PEOPLE that I couldn't actually do anything I wanted to do. Admittedly, I was stuck working a booth most of the time, so I didn't exactly have the luxury of waiting in line for 3 hours to get into a single panel.

I like PAX in that it is decently sized, it's got nice friendly panels, lots of interesting things to see, but more than anything it's a very fan-centric convention. People are there to just hang out and meet each other as much as go to panels or buy stuff. It's just a good atmosphere.
