Jedi Knight / Dark Forces

edited February 2010 in General Chat
Anyone a fan of the series? I personally think that they are some of the greatest Star Wars games ever made - there isn't really anything bad you can say about these games; all of the stories are good, gameplay is always smooth, great characters and great voice acting. And you get to use the FORCE! What more could you possibly want from a SW game. I thought I'd just throw a thread out here for those who like the games to discuss them.

    Funny you should bring these games up, I was playing through them before my PC died and I had to get a new one.

    They're great games and very enjoyable once you get into the right frame of mind - the level design can be a bit of a mind-bender at times - and the graphics are somewhat dated (easily fixed with Jedi Knight Enchanced), but overall they're good games and deserve to be played.

    Dark Forces 1 & 2 (Jedi Knight/MotS) are some of my favorite SW games too. In fact, I think they're the only ones I occasionally get back to.

    I used to make mods (custom characters) for JK back in the day;

    http://massassi.net/levels/files/1922.shtml

    Also made custom skins for Jedi Outcast and wrote a tutorial on how to do so for beginners;

    http://www.chopshopservers.com/education/Skinning_1.htm

    http://jediknight3.filefront.com/developer/jp30;4311

    And I worked on some texturing for the DF Remake using the Jedi Academy engine;

    http://darkforces.jediknight.net/

    So, uhh, yes - big fan of the series!

    Also - this is incredible - if you own Dak Forces, someone has built a new rendering engine for the game - so it uses all the original game's resources, but works magic with them;

    I tried modding for JK2, but just couldn't get my stuff to work properly. The id tech 3 engine hates me. Much prefer working with the GoldSrc and Source engines...

    That is quite incredible! So there are multiple mods for both Dark Forces and Jedi Knight, does anyone know if there are any for Mysteries of the Sith? There's one "coming soon" apparently, but any complete ones out there.

    I may check out you're custom character models later as well, jp.

    Are you talking about mods FOR MotS, or about MotS remakes?

    For the rest of the tutorial, replace 1 with 2, 3, 4 or 5 in the URL above.

    Well, either really. Whichever has or makes the best improvement on the graphics of the original.

    You can use Enhanced with MotS, but it doesn't replace all the models/textures, sadly.

    If you did want to use it though, rename 'JKE.gob' to 'JKE.goo' and place it into the Resource folder.

    Also, here's the site for DarkXL, the new engine for the original Dark Forces that lets you run it in Windows, use the mouse and is generally just plain awesome. You might want to wait until he releases build 9, as with build 8 you can't get past the fourth level. :(

    In that case, I guess I'll just wait for this (assuming the makers are still working on it).

    Don't hold your breath. These sort of projects take forever.

    Really love the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series. I own them all. I have very fond memories of playing the first Dark Forces with a boot disk to get it working right. Great times. Then I finally got Jedi Knight years after its release and experienced the rest of the series. I wish there were more Star Wars FPSs. Maybe taking place as a clone soldier or Storm Trooper? It seems odd that FPSs are one of the biggest game genres right now and yet Star Wars has barely any FPS games. Certainly none for a while now.

    Republic Commando? That was actually a pretty good FPS set during the prequel trilogy. You played a squad leader in charge of a small group of Clone Troopers. You might enjoy that, if you haven't already.

    But yeah, that one aside, there's not many FPS games in the Star Wars universe. Unless you count the Battlefront series, which you probably don't. I think it's good that LucasArts have stopped making so many SW games, but I do think another entry into the Jedi Knight series would be much appreciated (good though Force Unleashed 2 will no doubt be).

    Yeah, Republic Commando was great fun.

    Republic Commandos isn't the same. That's a sqaud-shooter. Like Rainbow Six or SWAT 3/4 right? Not really my idea of a "real" FPS. And I've not played Battlefront but I doubt it's as FPS as I'm looking for.

    Hey! Republic Commando's a proper FPS. It may have a squad, but that's not automatically a bad thing. Think of it more as Opposing Force than Rainbow Six. Yes you have a squad, but their AI is great, and at times it feels like you're playing Co-Op.

    If you haven't tried it, give the demo a go.

    For me Republic Commando can feel like Left 4 Dead, and that's a good thing.

    I'm not a bit multiplayer type of person and there haven't played L4D, but I can kind of see where you're coming from with that statement.
  • edited February 2010
    I'll try it out then. We'll see.

    Just tried the demo today. It's actually not bad. Not completely ideal, but not near as bad as I had thought it to be. I thought there'd be a lot more focus on tactics with dozens upon dozens of command shortcut keys you'd have to remember. I may just pick this one up. Maybe.
  • edited February 2010
    Nah, you just tell your squad to defend, attack and heal, pretty much. The rest is up to you.

    I just wanna know why the Trandoshans jump everywhere. :p

    The only reason I thought it'd be a hardcore squad shooter is because LucasArts have this thing where they have to copy every other game in the world and slap a Star Wars logo on top of it. So they use other games engines directly just to do that. I expected it'd be using a Rainbow Six or SWAT 4 engine or something.

    They've been getting better with that lately.
