Runaway 2

edited August 2009 in General Chat
Having just done my weekly check of Gameplanet, I was surprised to see that Runaway 2 will (apparently) be coming my way soon.

With the game touting itself as a traditional adventure I'd like to know how many of you are getting excited about it. For me, I found the first game to be somewhat disappointing. For its promise of humour all I got were some transvestites in a bus. For its story it had a traditional tale of hidden treasure mixed up with some horrible characters and settings.

Having just checked out some of the pre-release mumbo-jumbo I fear the next game will be the same. Even worse, the main character looks like a complete prick now. And his little lady still looks as clueless and vapid as before.

But apparently many of you are looking forward to a traditional style 2D adventure. Furthermore, it's not episodic! Considering this is what many of you have said time and time again that you want, I'd like to know what you think about it. Will you be rushing down to buy it as soon as possible? Me, I'll buy it when I've got some spare cash but I'm not exactly terribly excited about it.

Besides, I'm keeping my money aside for Bioshock, Alan Wake and Alone in the Dark plus the new computer parts I suspect I'm going to have to fork out for in order to play them. Now they look entertaining!

Pvt._Public, you always amaze me with your super criticism:)
As always, I can say I really liked that game, you're right when you say something wasn't planned well but I think those were negligible problems in a very well-made game.
I can't avoid to clap my hands as I see games like Runaway: traditional POINT&CLICK with no compromise.
Yes, some characters (included the main one) were a bit lacking of personality, and some parts of pixel hunting during the game could have been frustrating, but on the whole, I can't wait for Dream of the Turtle.
I don't wanna offend or anything, but don't you think that we the fans of point & click adventures should be more mentally open and more "merciful" with the new games being released? I don't think an attitude like yours will help game industries to have the nerve to make more graphic adventures.
Nothing personal, man, I just like to confront with each other.

No offense taken. But what I'm trying to figure out is if anyone out here is really excited about it. It's a traditional adventure game much like many people want. But is it maybe too traditional? Do you really want that? Is all anyone wants out of a new game a couple of cookie cutter characters and a good (but somewhat traditional) story?

Guybrush_Threepwood, don't be sorry. I'm asking for people like you to try and convince me that its a good game :)

I loved Runaway 2! Can't wait for Runaway 3: Twist of Fate!

I played the original Runaway and was amazed at how... bland it was. The voice-acting was meh, the pot was bordering on the ridiculous and I literally couldn't belive how counter-intuitive some of the puzzles were. There's the famous 'peanut butter' one that belies all expectations, but there's also others that are almost as bad.

I do have Dream of the Turtle, but I've yet to work up the motivation to actually play it. Maybe some day. As for Twist of Fate... I'll stick with Telltale, thanks. I know I can trust them to be consistantly excellent.

"Dream of the Turtle" is a lot better than "A Road Adventure", I suggest you play it!

Runaway 2 does have one major problem in my opinion; it ends abruptly and annoyingly (like The Matrix Reloaded, for example), basically telling you "this is only half the story and you've gotta pay up again later, loser."

I thought it was great, a good cliffhanger designed to get you excited about the next game (and to get you to buy the next one as well, yeah)!

Yeah, like I said, my opinion. I've often run into fiction that ends with a major cliffhanger like that and all too often doesn't survive to another edition, so I've become rather annoyed by them. Also, when it's done in full-size games rather than episodic titles, it often seems too blatant in the need to keep you coming back.

If that's the case, I'll wait until I have the third one before playing the second. I hate games that end on cliffhangers (Telltale's episodic offerings excepted). I'm looking at you, Valve. Stupid Episodes taking forever to come out, brr...
