I have this problem when I play Source games on a PC... every time. Its usually because the user access control (those annoying popups that ask you to allow or deny things) aren't being answered. You can't see these UAC popups, since you are most likely running TF2 in full-screen. Since the default UAC answer is "no", windows will quit hl2.exe. So my suggestion (and this may sound a bit risky) is to turn of UACs in the control panel. If you have a good enough virus scanner/firewall, this won't be an issue.

I'd do that, but I cant find it in the control panel.

You might want to try following everything in this detailed troubleshooting guide if the UAC advice above doesn't help.

Are we even sure he's using Windows Vista or 7? Because XP had none of the UAC stuff...

If the crash continues even after performing all of the troubleshooting steps in this guide, you will need to contact Steam Support for further assistance. To ensure that your incident is handled in the quickest and most efficient manner possible, please follow these steps:

    1. Prepare a MSINFO32 Report
    2. Submit Your Support Request

Please include your MSINFO32 report as an attachment to the incident.

It sends it directly to the support at Steam. You should get an email notification when they respond to your ticket.

I hope you get more help than I did from Steam Support. When I first got Left 4 Dead, I couldn't play it because during the load screen before the main menu it would give me a server error. Tried every fix I could and it didn't work, and Steam just went and repeated everything I already tried, with the ticket eventually being closed by them, despite my problem not being fixed. Fortunately in the next patch they released it seemed to fix the problem, but I had to wait about a month or 2 for that though.

When I've had a problem like that with hl2 sourced games, it was usually due to a file error, which was fixed by doing an integrity check, but I'm guessing you've probably already tried that.

    yes i did try that.

Few things suck worse than buying a game you've been wanting, just to have it crash on startup, with no known solutions to be found/created.

Do you have any other Source games on your system? If so, have you tried them since trying TF2? I'm probably barking up the wrong tree here, but you never know.

Uhh does Garrys Mod count. if so yeah, it does work, it also uses the hl2.exe which refuses to work on TF2(and yes i tried switching the garrysmod hl2.exe to TF2 another failing option.)
And yes few thingss suck worse than this. I am really starting to think getting xbla gold just to play the 360 tf2.
EDIT: ok i have one final idea. To anyone that owns TF2, could you copy your hl2 file onto here, and see if i were to use that file on my tf2 to see if that is the problem.
EDIT:2 i tried just activating hl2.exe on its own, and i got this message, so to any technical geeks, can you please tell me what it means.

Your .exe isn't the problem, Steam would have caught something like that. Unfortunately, I can't even begin to imagine what the issue is at this point. Guess there's nothing to do but wait for Valve's tech support to write back.

Somewhere in your Steam game library there's a tab for advanced options on local files. Click the button to verify your TF2 game files.

Ensure that you have the latest version of DirectX and drivers for your hardware. Disable antivirus and firewall programs.

If none of that works, head to the Steam and TF2 forums on their site and see if they can help you.

I feel like reviving this thread because it still doesnt work(although ALL of the other games dont have exe issues now its just this one) because

If you're using Windows 7 or vista, try turning compatability mode to Windows XP, you need to find the .exe file, right-click > properties

It's a bit of a makey-up answer, but it might be worth a try if you've tried everything else

That was actually how I fixed all of the other games, but no this one is special and refused to do that.
Is there another exe file besides hl2.exe(which seems to be the main threat)
Or will the other option I stated in another thread where I give up and install on a relatives computer and play whenever I visit his house(which seems to be a lot so that is an option)
EDIT: actually there are multiple XPs is there a specific one if I one Windows 7.

Did you try [TTG] Yare's suggestion yet?
    attachment.php?attachmentid=1378&d=1271524574

You should also download and run the latest DirectX 9 web updater. (Even if you run Windows Vista or 7, the DirectX 9 libraries required for many games may be outdated)

    Tried this?

Your computer spec could also help.
  • edited April 2010
Ive tried all that and I really dont what what my computer specs are and I cant show you my dxdiag file do to form limits.
EDIT: ok now the game is flat out refusing to load up, no error message no nothing, it will just quit without starting now.

from the dxdiag copy the processor and the memory and the name from the display tab.

Also do you have any of these programs installed?

It may just be that your PC cannot run TF2, though uninstalling it and reinstalling it may help. Also close as many programs as possible before playing the game.

Ok here are my specs I guess

    Processor: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz (2 CPUs), ~1.6GHz
    Memory: 1024MB RAM
Card name: Mobile Intel(R) 945 Express Chipset Family

Also I have a Netbook with Windows 7 if that also helps I know Now that Netbooks arent the best for games(ironically I bought it to play my games:p) but I dont think a replacement is on the horizon so that is not an option.

Where is the config file? is it in like my computer or in the game itself because if so that wont work at all.(I get the error now before I can play it)

From the Steam folder in Program files

    steamapps>[yoursteamusername]>Team Fortress 2>tf>cfg>Config

For the config file select choose program from a list, then select notepad, it should open.

I really can't promise this will work, with your computer being quite under powered particularly with respect to games.
  • edited April 2010
In addition to what Chyron said, you could try just right-clicking the exe, selecting 'Properties', 'Compatibility' and then select 'Run this program as administrator'. If you're in a pinch, you can try to run it in compatibility mode for Windows Vista or Windows XP from that same tab (depending on what OS you're using).
Also, last but not least... if you're on a 64bit OS, not all games like that...

Ok now when i find it it will not let me open it in a notepad, so is there another way to open it or is it time for this and go install it at a relatives and play whenever I go there.

Yeah, I'm thinking that. even if you managed to run it I don't know if the FPS you'd get would be playable.

Believe me I already installed steam on his computer, so yeah Im going with sucking it up and only playing the game there.
I hope this doesnt happen or Im going to throw every computer I see out a window.

I would just like to say I got it working at the relatives house, so Ill just play whenever Im there:D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
(Although there computer does restart on its own for no reason, but hey Im sure to get a few backstabs in between.)

I'm in the same boat as you. We have very similar systems, and I honestly don't think that we have what it takes to run TF2 normally, which is a shame because I love class-based shooters and TF2 sounds like a slice of gaming heaven! I've tried numerous configurations which have enabled me to play the game relatively smoothly (albeit looking like crap) before crashing again. I wasted my money on the Orange Box and now it just sits there, taunting me in my Steam queue! HL2 works, but crashes frequently, as does Portal.

I bought Team Fortress Classic and play that instead. It's pretty fun, but TF2... Alas!

There's this thread on the official TF2 forums detailing how to get TF2 running on the worst computers around:

What's sad is that didn't even help... Which makes no sense! Can TF2 at those levels really take so much more memory than games like Tales of Monkey Island and Sam and Max?

Whatever. Thank you Telltale, for not making your games insane memory hogs. Screw Valve!
  • edited April 2010
    Screw Valve!

Hey, dont go saying that because our computers suck.
Lets just be glad we have the xbox/PS3 version to play to(or I have my realaives PC version to play whenever I visit:D plus I have yet to try that plan.
