Best $4 ever spent

edited March 2010 in General Chat
Today I was in a local game shop and saw mirror's edge for $4
Now I heard some good things (and some not good things) about mirror's edge so I bought it. And that got me thinking,
What is the best $4 ever spent?

So I put it to you
What is the best $4 you have ever spent (no more than $4)

$4's like what £2.50? And seeing as most stuff's a lot more expensive over here than the States it's a tricky question.

I got a nice pair of Italian leather shoes for work in a closing down sale for a tenner once... i'll get back to you

I can't think of anything that was four dollars exactly, but I once spent $1 on Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. Less than a year after it came out, no less. I have no idea why it was only a dollar, but it was easily the best game deal I've ever seen (pre-Steam).

Best game deal I ever made would have to be Psychonauts for $2 (Steam sale).

I don't think I've ever got a game for the equivalent of $4, but I did get a Super Nintendo with two controllers and Super Mario World from a charity shop for £10.

I spent £9 on Conkers bad furday on the N64, which i then sold for £45 on Ebay.

I have absolutely no clue. I rarely buy things that cost that little...
I got a copy of Elite Beat agents for 5 euros in my video game store but that's the closest.

For $5, this was a pretty amazing deal. I already owned the collector's DVD of Season 1 thanks to eBay (the seller also listed it on their site, in case you don't believe me), but I gladly threw another $5 at Telltale to have the downloadable versions.

Maybe, someday, they'll find some time to upgrade Season 1 to widescreen, and now I'd be able to downlad it!

    Pretty please? ;)

€2.50 for Team Fortress 2 for my bro. Best €2.50 I've ever spent.

And yes, I already did own the game at that time.

What is that supposed to mean? (I'm serious, I'm not sure what you mean).

That's Rich Uncle Pennybags, the mascot for Monopoly. As a caricature of the rich, his use implies that you spend a lot of money on things, because you are similar to Rich Uncle Pennybags.

That's Rich Uncle Moneybags, AKA the Monopoly man from the board game of same name. He's a universal symbol of wealth and affluence. He also dresses a bit like a ringmaster

I knew it was the monopoly guy but wasn't sure exactly what that meant.

So the assumption is that I spend a lot of money on things? That's not true.
It's not that I don't spend money on little things because I'd rather spend more, it's that I don't spend money on little things because I'd rather not spend at all. I feel they add up and you tend not to account for them, so in that way they can hurt more than bigger ($20, $30) purchases that you have to save up for and as a result know you spent.

As a result, the only time I'd buy something that's under 4 dollars would be if I had already planned to buy it and started saving up and it happened to get on sale in the meantime.

I mean, I'm not going to buy something just because it's on sale if I didn't want to get it to begin with. And I can't plan if something is going to be on sale or not, obviously. So in the end it doesn't happen often that something is on sale right when I wanted to get it.

And things that cost $4 or less when not on sale are rarely things I want to begin with, so I'm not going to buy them just because they're cheap, that would be stupid.

for 4 bucks though... i'd say broken sword for the iphone on sale for $3.99
i have no clue how i missed that game as a child but it is AMAZING, and the finger swipe system is genius, it lets you actually navigate the impossibly tiny screen and click on a item 1/4 the size of my finger... absolutely genius (pay attention telltale!)

I bought at Software ETC a long time ago Koala Lampur for $1. That left me $3 for candy.

I've got some great bargains on games before.

On Amazon, I bought Simon the Sorcerer 4 for £2.50 and Spore Creature Creator for 85p. Of course, once you add the price of shipping it costs quite a bit more! But I remember being pleased with my purchases nevertheless. (the price I paid for STS4 is close to $4 probably)

And of course there was that time on Steam last year when SMI:SE was on sale for £1.75 for the day. That was nice! And since it was a digital download, no shipping!

I also specifically remember that the day I bought SMI:SE I had also bought a bus ticket that cost almost twice that much!

Man, and I felt lucky when I picked up Mirror's Edge for mere 9 euros. o.o

That must have been one of the cheapest things I've found. If I don't count that one Ps1 Mega Man I found from a flea market. (scratchy and didn't even have the cover paper on it, but at least it works! around 2 euros I guess.)

Deus Ex. 1 euro. That was for a friend of mine though, I already bought it myself for 10 gulden (in the pre-euro time, kids. I doubt you'll remember it).

The White Album on vinyl for £2 was a very very nice snag actually :)

Best £4 I ever spent? Me and some friends once chipped in to buy £40 worth of Pepsi cans. We couldn't drink them all and bought a couple packets of mentos to use in the spares.

Well... according to Don Rosa, he keeps his money as a memento of his adventures and that why he never spend more than the necessary to still have more adventures. If somebody wants to know.

For the record, diving in coins actually hurts. I suggest bills only.

Or better yet, Credit cards! Saves on those nasty paper cuts.

    1) Plastic cuts are bad too, I'll take the paper at that speed.
    2) The point of swimming in money is that it's money! It's worth a lot! You don't get that with debit (or even worse, credit) cards. They're not representative of how rich or poor you are, they might only be representative of how much in debt you are.

No, you need actual money, not a tool that can allow you to spend money (such as a card or a chequebook). Otherwise it's not the same.
Avoid gems, too, by the way. And you might think swimming in oil would be a good idea since it's a liquid, but please reconsider.

    Ahem, if I may...

In most countries paper money is actually nothing more than a glorified IOU. If you take it to the bank then they exchange it for coins which have monetary value usually because of the metals used in making them*

*I tried reading up on why coins are considered real money but I suffered a massive head 'splosion trying to take it all in, so consider this my botched understanding, but I think it's something like that... isn't this interesting?

What I meant is that they have an assigned value to them. Cards don't. You can have lots of credit cards that are all tied to debts, or debit cards tied to accounts with no money in them, etc. Or you could have just one and be super-rich because there is a lot on the account.

Bills tell you how much money they're worth just by looking at them, but cards aren't representative of anything like that.

    That's what I meant.

I had some rewardzone points to spend at bestbuy today .... I used them on the Strong bad game on PC... and trivial persuit for the PS3 (what? I am ridiculously good at random trivia).... the remaining balance was about $4
