Psychonauts questions

edited April 2010 in General Chat
Hi all. Im playing Psychonauts for the first time, and yes, it is awesome.

But you know, i got some doubts.

First, i keep hearing awfull stuff about the last level:
"I quit the game because of the Meat Circus"
"Couldnt pass the Meat Circus"
"The Meat Circus is so frustrating"
"The Meat Circus kill my parents"

And im beginning to worry. Is it so bad? Without any major spoilers, please ease my mind.

Second doubt: I am at the asylum level (the one with the rats) and im collecting all the brains. Now, i sense im near the end of the game, but i think i should bring all this brains to the camp at some point and also rank up with the cards. But i dont know if i will be able to do that after i finished this level or not. It would be a pain in the butt to go to the camp and then have to climb up this level all again. So, when should i go back?

Finally: i also missed some luggage and stuff in the other levels, can i still play those levels after i won the game? (That is if the the Meat Circus dont kill my parents of course)

Thanks.

1#Last level's honestly not that hard. It's just harder than the rest of the game.

2#To put it in the least spoliery way possible, the point of no return is when you save lili. You'll know when that happens. And even if you forget, there's a machine outside the big top in the final level that will cash in anything you forgot to use.

Oh and the last thing- Yeah when the point of no return happens, you'll be able to go back to the mental levels, just not the physical ones.

I seriously suck at platform games, and I have a very low threshold for frustration when I have to do parts of a game over again.

Even I managed to finish Meat Circus, so it can't be that bad!

Yeah, the Meat Circus isn't as bad as everybody says. I had trouble with only one part and I got over it quickly.

Also, when you get all the way up to the top, there's an elevator that can take you up and down, the one near Boyd.

I ran into trouble two times, first
when Raz has to protect Oly while he's flying up from platform to platform
    , and secondly
at the section where Raz has to do a lot of acrobatics challenges while the water is rising (specifically the floating fences with fire shooting out of them.)

Fortunately both locations had unlimited continues, you don't lose lives there. So you can get through it simply by practice, practice, practice.

Thanks all, i won it a few hours ago. Awesome game.

Yes, the meat circus wasnt easy, but it wasnt all that bad. The last part, the one with the water was the hardest.
Although before all that i got up to rank 90. Im sure that without the health regeneration it was a different story.

The final level isn't too bad until you get to that bit with the platforms and the water and oh god there's not enough time and I can;t screw up not even once and no way I totally made that jump oh great now I have to start all over again gah!

It's not as bad as everyone makes it out to be, but the difficulty is a massive leap up from the previous levels, so it can be a bit off-putting.

Unfortunately, I literally cannot play Psychonauts due to the Gloria von Guten level performing horrifically with the ATI Radeon drivers. The framerate, honest to god, dips into single digits. Bah!

The worst part is definitely having to climb that fence that's on fire, especially when Raz just won't jump the direction you want him to.

One time I got to the part with the giant ladder (which means you're done, pretty much), but I had wasted too much time and part of the ladder was already submerged, and when I hit the water I died and had to try again. :(

Do you guys know to hold the levitation button before you jump from a climbable wall? I never had trouble with the water part, and I wonder how well known that trick is.

I did have trouble with the escort mission, though. I hate escort missions.

Im playing it again now, (to see funny things i missed), but i keep getting killed by the lungfish and since the save system sucks so much i have to start the whole level again.

Im trying to enter the "full lives" cheat, but for some reason it doesnt work. I think the mousewheel button doesnt work if im pressing the right button at the same time.

Did this cheat worked for someone?

Edit: Its okay, the Lungfish was knocked again.

I was forced to stop my first play-through of Psychonauts when Mass Effect 2 came out, and I've still not continued playing it... I'm so bad at commitments.

Same here. I must have failed at that part about 25 times. It was the only part that I really struggled with in basically the whole game.

This happened to me a couple times on the PS2 version I had..it also didn't help that the game kept freezing coz I'd loaned it to my friends and the disc was returned rather badly scratched.

The Xbox version (on my 360) ran great. There was one oddity in that when I pulled up the menu Raz's clothes would become dyed the same teal/turquoise color as the menu for the rest of that playing session, only to be restored after turning the game off and back on.

The Meat Circus sucked but it wasn't impossible.

It wasn't hard. I've done it easily. Jack Black has done it easily. I really don't see the fuss about it.

Actually, the flaming fence wasn't all that bad for me. I did it easily. I think I jumped to the outside of the fence, though I died the first time because I couldn't tell where I was supposed to go and I kept trying to jump to the floating meat in the middle.

The part I had trouble on was floating my way down while dodging flaming whatever-they-weres.

I feel that Psychonauts is one of the best games of all time.

Random Gameplay Hint of the Day:
When you are being chased underwater, pull out your dowsing rod. Some deep arrowheads down there are worth around 1000 arrowheads. Perfect for getting the Cobweb Duster.

    Invisibility works wonders with that.
