What are Your Top 3 Favorite & Least Favorite Video Game Companies?

edited April 2010 in General Chat
Telltale is excluded simply because I know how you people work.... One person says it being serious & that the whole flock comes in & agrees simply because this Telltale's website. On second thought, I want to keep this as honest as possible... so I guess that I have to allow it... just don't say them unless you are being 100% honest.

Active-Inactive, Developer-Publisher ... all is legal

For me

Favorites-
1. Namco
2. Sega
3. Capcom

Least Favorites-
1. Acclaim

I would choose Valve, id Software, TTG and one place for all the indie developers (Amanita Design, Critical Thought Games, Pixel Jam, Runic Games, Terry Cavanagh, InXile, 2D Boys, and many many more) out there who are doing great games.

Worst three would go to companies who are doing those horrible MMOS, war-, music- racing- and socialgames.

    Um.

    Huh.

There are dozens of small, indie developers that I love, don't get me wrong, but those two are about it for "companies that are a cut above everything else". Maybe Atlas?

Least Favorite? I don't think I actively dislike any game companies. Maybe Square Enix for pushing the whole bishie giant belt thing on JRPGs and bowing to the idol crowd and the fashion fangirl crowd, while filling their "stories" with teen angst and...blegh. And I guess Blizzard too?

Huh. LucasArts only RECENTLY got off the Hate list. They're not quite yet into the Like list in my book, or even the Favorite list.

Are we talking about companies NOW or in the past? Because if we can talk about dead companies, for example, Sierra and Infocom get a strong showing in my favorites list.

I was counting Lucasarts for what they had done in the past. I was counting companies then and now, so uh, as far as I know anything goes.

TTG, Lucasarts (yeah yeah I know) and Nintendo.... its really hard to pick...

worst I dunno..... im sure I have forgotten about them.

As I mentioned in my first post, Active or Inactive.... It doesn't really matter.

On a side note, I really feel like reaching the screen & Pimp smacking a couple of you for your choices.... not mentioning any name simply for the sake of keeping this, at the very least, moderately civil.

Well, I love ttg and double fine, I know that, but I'm not really sure what else to put on this list.

As for hate, I'm not all too sure. There's a lot of people who seem to hate ubisoft here. Considering Beyond Good and Evil is the only ubisoft game I've played, I can't really hate them, though I can't say much about them either.

A lot of people are gonna hate me for this, but I'm sorta getting sick of Nintendo. I definitely like many of their games, but I'm getting tired of how recycled and unintuitive they are. I mean, yeah, the Wii, but I've lost a lot of interest in the lack of quality I have seen with their products as of late and just simply haven't held any interest in me. It just seems like they've been riding their same set of franchises over and over again into the ground. That said, I don't HATE Nintendo. I just... I don't know. Their products are starting to feel soulless to me and I'm just not really a fan anymore.

I'm quite curious as to why some of you consider Valve and Blizzard to be worst. Yes, I know I have Activision-Blizzard on mine, though this is entirely due to their business practices and apparent lack of ethics.

    Square Enix

Are we talking developers? Publishers? Or both?

I'll do both. Here's my favourites:

    Valve
    Tell Tale Games
Interplay (I know they haven't made any games lately, but they still exist and their games rock)

    Least Favourites:

    ActiVision
    EA
id Software - I can't really think of any other developers/publishers I truly dislike, so I chose id Software because all their games are basically the same. They're either something related to the occult or twisted mutated/cyborg humans. Or both.

    Some other favourites:

    Raven Software
    Double Fine Productions
    LucasArts (Lately)
    Bethesda Softworks
Sierra On-Line (NOT the current ghost label Sierra Entertainment)
    Cyan
    Atari
    Quantic Dream
Retro Studios (they'd be on the list if they didn't only make Metroid games and those 3 key members didn't leave)

I was going to put Square Enix in my least favourites list but they've recently remade Thexder on PSN and I appreciate that.

I dont hate any game companies so mines is favorite to not as much.

    Favorite:
    1. Telltale
    2.Valve
    3. Bioware

    Not as Much:
    1. Bungie (how dare they get bought out by microsoft thus never letting us mac users get Halos 2 and 3. (the reason we have one is because they were already working on it when they got bought out))
    2. LucasArts (bring us new point and click games)
    3. High Octane Games (I think that's right, that one that has the reputation for ruining crash bandicoot and now has done Jak and Daxter The Last Frontier and actually didnt ruin it?

    Love

    1. Telltale
    2. Valve
    3. Nintendo

Honourable mention to Infinity Ward, but the whole MW2 debacle kept em off my list

    Hate

    1. Activision (we can pick publishers right?)
    2. Treyarch
    3. Midway

Also Namco, I jsut don't like any of their franchises
  • edited April 2010
Well, Telltale's definitely up there as one of my favourites, but you all know that. XD

So I'll try to come up with others...

    -Maxis
    -Black Isle
-7th Level (y'know... when they existed)

LucasArts and Team17 get honourable mentions because I used to play a lot of their games, and loved them. But I'm unfamiliar with what they're up to now (with an exception of LucasArts doing the MI special editions).

Can't think of any "least favourites" though. When I play a game I dislike I tend to forget who actually made it!!

Every video game company that makes generic licensed video games.

So, a game based on Spongebob Squarepants. What's it like? You jump around and smash bad guys.

A game based on Fairly Oddparents. What's it like? You jump around and smash bad guys.

A game based on Chicken Little. What's it like? Oh, is it different than the others? Why yes; you jump around and shoot bad guys.

Telltale is the first, and so far, the only video game company I like that primarily makes licensed video games. Why? BECAUSE THE GAMEPLAY RESEMBLES THE FRANCHISE, aka the advantage of making adventure games.

So, I guess I hate companies along the lines of THQ and stuff?

Oh, and I only kinda like Penny Arcade Adventures.
  • edited April 2010
Eh, licensed isn't always that bad (there are plenty good Star Wars games for example), just the movie-adoption kind.

And pretty sure there was never a Sam&Max movie.

Well, licensed IPs don't have to be from movies or TV, it could be from existing games as well.

And yes, licensed games aren't all bad. But the games that are basically characters of some kid TV show jumping around fighting robots get old pretty fast, even with the added humor of the series. Licensed games that are aimed toward adults such as Batman Arkham Asylum, Matrix Path of Neo and the latest Ghostbuster game are pretty enjoyable, but mainly because the gameplay is just like what you see in the film/comic.
