edited May 2010 in General Chat
I was watching eastenders with my brothers friend while my brother was in the other room and the christian saiyd gay storyline came on and he started saying its wrong and i said they just love each other and he started saying its sick and he hang his son if he was gay he would hang him and other homophobic insults. I was really offended but my brother and mum where arguing about summit and I didnt wana add to it but I am really annoyed by what he said mainly cos when on corrnation street with the lesbians he didn't say anything cos there "fit".

Well you did say something. I don't think you could have changed his mind, honestly.

The biggest problem is watching Eastenders in the first place.

Either he's young and immature or one of those over-compensating homophobes. I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it

Next time he comes round you should watch Wilde, Brokeback Mountain, or I Love You Phillip Morris. :P

I can just imagine it now. I wonder if they'd make things poke out the screen... (sorry!)

Anyway, as much as i hate homophobes, it's unlikely anything you could have said would have changed his mind. It is a belief he's had (probably) for a large portion of his life. Sometimes the only way to change their mind is for someone close to them to actually come out (which will probably lead to some harsh words/cold shouldering to begin with, but he would probablyget over it in a few months, and put up with it. Even get used to the idea)

Whoa, at least there's sense on it. One of my friends is gay (Closeted) and another of my friends is homophobic, and those guys are good friends! I was fearing the moment my first friend decided to talk about it to the latter. At least it's probably to be fixed in a couple of months. Good to know, then! I hope so...

Well, it really depends. Some people will go "you're gay, and I know you're a great person, surely I must have been wrong about gay people being horrible people".
Other people will go "you're gay, and gay people are horrible, surely I must have been mistaken thinking you were a good person. You can't be, since you're gay, and I only though you were because you were hiding your real self from me".
Yet other people will go "Well, you're an exception".

So... You can't really say, you know? Different people will have different reactions.

I wanna think positive once, because I always really believed that thing is a lost cause.

One of my brothers is gay. The first thing I thought when I found out, was that I had a whole utopia of playful and colourful insults to use when we bicker open up for me

I suppose it all matters on how tightly they hold their beliefs, and how much they like the other person (enough to forsake part of their beliefs?).

I'd say it depends if they're the kind of people who change their beliefs to match reality, or refuse to believe reality if it doesn't match their beliefs.

I'm not sure how much they like the other person is that relevant, as I'm sure if they're part of the second category, they'll just assume everything they liked about that person was just a lie.

Sailorcuteness, you should come out to your family if you haven't already. I'm sure they'll understand. If your brother doesn't like it, chances are people will be on your side.

Eastenders is a soap opera in England about various idiots from East London. The other major soap, Coronation Street, is about idiots from Manchester. Basically, in order to qualify as a proper soap opera in England, every character must have a strong regional accent and an IQ below 40.

Oh. I don't like soap operas. They're like Heroes but without superpowers, with the long lost twins and the family secrets, and I already got bored of Heroes.

No, wait, it's the other way around. Heroes is like soap operas, but with super powers. And that got boring.

Arrested Development is like soap operas, but with comedy. And I like that. Any one of you guys watch Arrested Development?

Oh, Eastenders is also the most depressing show ever conceived by man. Seriously any happy moment instantly gets overshadowed by about 30 sad moments and every Christmas for the past... well since it started, something really bad happens. Usually someone dies or gets murdered.

Arrested Development is the polar opposite of soap operas in terms of quality. Why did they have to cancel it? :(

Edit: Oh God, I forgot about Fred Elliot. I youtube'd "fred elliot" and found this. It shows some of the finest writing and acting Coronation Street has to offer. Also, kill me.

    UPDATE:
my brothers friend apologised to me 4 what he said
  • edited April 2010
I guess there's hope for him after all.
  • edited April 2010
There was a time when apologies actually included the words "I'm sorry", or "I was wrong", or "I made a mistake". Seems that these days that's all condensed to the words "We cool?"

And therefore it ended before it completely changes into something else after 50 seasons, and becomes less than awesome. Soap Operas can just go forever as long as something shocking happens to the characters each season.

    Like, breaking a nail.

    Heh, yeah.

Well, I meant like finding out character A is actually adopted. Finding out that character B and C are having an incestruous relationship. Finding out that Character D is cheating on character E. Finding out that Character F has a twin sibling.

Arrested Development did all those things, but with comedy, and therefore is awesome,

My friend's 19-year-old brother got kicked out the house by his mum when he discovered he was gay. Apparently she won't talk to him anymore. I don't know if I'm just making a stereotypical assumption by thinking that this could have something to do with the fact that they are in fact a catholic family, but even so I thought it was a bit extreme. It's not like he could help it or anything! What's he supposed to do, live a lie?

Anyway, glad to hear your brother's friend apologized eventually. It's just a pity this sort of discrimination still goes on in the world. And for the records, some of the nicest people I know have turned out to be gay!

    On the topic of Eastenders:
Another friend of mine lost her grandad a few years ago on Christmas Eve. So ever since, that's what she's associated Christmas with. But that's real life. Whereas in Eastenders, it's kinda weird how they seem to not only start off all happy every Christmas despite all the terrible things that have happened to them in the past, but also they are always completely taken by surprise whenever someone gets killed on Christmas Day. You'd think they'd have gotten used to it by now!!

Well we're Catholic and my bro's gay and we're all cool. Guess it depends on just how Catholic they are

I don't know any gay people. My life sucks.
