Doctor who? NO, just The Doctor.

edited April 2010 in General Chat
Everybody loves Doctor Who, and why shouldn't they? it's awesome and it's been around for forever. Being as old as it is, we've had a lot of different actors playing the doctor, about 11 by my count. So here's the question, Which one's your favorite?

I may end up leaning towards Matty-boy by the end of this series, but currently DT is the best IMAO

I'd have to say Tom Baker, but I'd like to have Matt change my mind.

David Tennant from ner era and Selvester Mcoy from classic Iv met the 7th in rl at a convention he was verry nice and even let me come back cos i forgot to take a photo XD

I don't have experience with enough Doctors to have a valid opinion, really. I liked the last guy, but that's an unpopular opinion, so I'll just assume it's invalid and that the others were a million times better.

I liked David Tennant a lot, but when Matt Smith checked to see if he had eyes in the regeneration scene I thought I might just have to change my allegiance. Everything I've seen of him so far has supported this.

just realized i forgot to say mine, so here i go. For me, Tom Baker is the definitive Doctor Who, for me he embodies all the positive attributes of the character and his era was definitely the best of the earlier series. Also, he really nailed that quirky energy that all of the doctors since him have been using.
But just while i'm ranting, i wanna make it clear that i do LOVE what I've seen of Matt Smith so far, much to my girl friend's chagrin (she had a THING for David Tennant)

For me, gotta be Christopher Eccleston, even for that short amount of time he was around, I just liked his style, the darker, brooding, angrier Doctor, more of a wise father like figure but also a loner. Really helped bring the show back to, having that kind of Doctor with him playing it made peoples views change about the show, the ones expecting The Doctor to be some foppish person with wacky style and talking to everyone as if they were his children.

Plus his actual style was cool to, I mean, Black pants, Shoes, Long Sleeve T-Shirt and an old styled Leather Jacket, it actually looked good, not wacky or zany but casual and minimal yet unique.

I've only really seen the new series, although I do remember Tom Baker from my parents watching the show when I was a kid (it scared the pants off me then!).

David Tennant is by far and away my favourite Doctor - so much crazy ENERGY, beautiful to watch in motion, and such a sense of glee in everything, which made his sad and desperate moments all the more poignant. Oh, and great hair. :p

    now, that is a valid point and i respect your point of view and sound reasoning, but i have two reasons why i still think Baker is the best;
    reason one
    reason two

Are you referring to the hotness of his assistants? Ha - as a straight female, I am immune to your underhanded tactics. :D

touché puzzlebox, i know for one thing my girlfriend would definitely side with you on that one.

    Tom Baker. Pertwee close behind.

Hmmm. While my knowledge of Classic Who is far smaller than Modern Who, what I've seen of the various eras is enough for me to state, honestly, that I find most of The Doctors to have some unique element that makes them worthwhile to watch. In other words, I have no favorites (just a few complaints, more towards the production and writing sides than the acting side). However, I would very much like "New Who" to give the Eighth Doctor a proper sendoff; despite all the supplementary materials he's portrayed The Doctor in, I feel that Paul McGann deserves more than just the TV movie. Of course, if anyone plans to delve into the Time War in depth, the appearance of the Eighth Doctor is pretty much a given.

Somehow, I doubt they're going to delve into the Time War. TBH, I'm pretty happy with that - they could never do it justice on a TV budget, even with the one they have ATM. Better to let fans imagine it.

I was a big fan of Christopher Eccleston, so if I had to pick my favourite, it'd be a tie between him and Paul McGann. However, Matt Smith is definitely becoming a potential for a three-way tie.

I would like to see it happen for the 2012 50th anniversary special. Along with a(or possibly the) Xdoctors episode (with Smith, Tennant and Mcgann, showing Mcgann's regeneration).

As for my favourite doctor, i'll give you my opinions on them in a list format!

William Hartnell: The original, and it definately shows. His character always seemed a bit to grouchy for my liking.

Patrick Troughton:I can't really say much, as i've only seen 2 of his serials, but i guess his slightly pannicky nature would have been refreshing at the time.

Pertwee:He had a sort of elegance and charm, which i really liked. It's just a shame he was stranded an earth for most of the time.

Tom Baker: He combined the best elements of the previous Doctor's, and added his own character. However, he stayed too long.

Peter Davison: His youth was refreshing, and he is probably my favourite of them all

Colin Baker: He seemed far too brash for my tastes. That combined with an annoyingly whiney assistant, really turned me off his era

Sylvester McCoy: I've only seen one of his serials, and i hated it. Although i think that was down to the writing. Cheetah People? Seriously?

    Paul McGann:
I loved him in the movie, and in the few audioplays i've bought. It's just a real shame he couldn't appear in more episodes.

Christopher Eccleston: The guy who got my hooked on who. He had enthusiasm, raw emotion and cleverness. I just loved his little sulks he would go into.

Tennant: Also another great doctor, with some fantastic writing. I think he stayed for just about the right amount of time though.

    Matt Smith
: Loving his portrayal so far!

I am a new-series fan. I've only watched the new series. Therefore I say David Tennant, like most new-series fans.

David Tennant? No, I'd say that's a very popular opinion, even among the fanatic Doctor Who fans online. I'd also have to go with him, since I've only watched the 'new' series. Such a great actor.

In what is an extremely odd occurrence for me, I get a "Episode Not Available In Your Country" message. BBC America is also a non-starter, same with Hulu...the US streaming portals seem content to only show recent Who material.
  • edited April 2010
Netflix also has quite a few of the Old!Who episodes. However, for the missing episodes of late first Doctor and most of the second Doctor, you have to go for the fan recreations, which I believe can be found on Dailymotion. Maybe Youtube as well.

Huh. Try i assumed that because it was the BBC worldwide youtube channel, at least some would work. Try Some of the later episodes on the youtube channel. Afterall, i'm not sure many episodes pre Tom baker aired over in the states, or anywhere else over then the UK for that matter.

What country are you from anyway?

I thought "This is an odd occurrence for me" would give it away. If not that, I thought the fact that I tried to access the episodes from BBC America would give it away. =P

Yes, I'm in the United States, with all the arrogance and lack of geographical knowledge that the nationality implies.

Tom Baker, up until Sarah Jane-Smith's departure, after that there was something missing..

Worst: Colin Baker (Tom Bakers evil lesser cousin)

So far I've only seen William Hartnell episodes, so I guess my favourite doctor is... William Hartnell.
This video contains content from BBC Worldwide, who has blocked it in your country on copyright grounds.
Is it just me that finds this message a bit hilarious? (From the linked youtube channel)

The odd thing is, they even blocked the UK out at one point!
@RatherDashing:That's what i thought (from the post), but i wanted to make sure (for some reason, i always pictured you as Australian!)

Well, here's a bunch of the reconstructions. Basically, they're audio matched with a slideshow of relevant pictures, although some have animation as well.

    Enjoy!

Rowan Atkinson's Doctor of course. But seriously I'm going to have to wait for this series to end before I can pick my favorite out of 9, 10 and 11. I didn't really watch Doctor Who until it came back.

I'm still, to this day forward, not quite sure why I liked Peter Davison so much. But he was always my favourite.

As for the new Doctor Who. David Tennant is the best so far, out of the three. Course, I haven't seen that much of Matt Smith yet.

Of Old!Who, I think my favorite has got to be Colin Baker. I know a lot of people didn't like him for one reason or another, but I gotta respect him because he tried to kill Peri. Which is something I had wanted to do for a while.

Also, he had the Valeyard to contend with.

But, in reality, I've liked all of the doctors pretty much equally.

I have no idea what in my demeanor would make me seem Australian. I also have no idea if that should be taken as a compliment to me or as an insult to Australia, though I have the sneaking suspicion that it's the latter. =P

He becomes a hell of a lot more likeable in the Big Finish audios, which just goes to show how the TV crew had no idea what to do with him.

I've only listened to one of those, I think. I believe it had doctors 5,6, and 7. But yeah, totally much better. The sixth Doctor's era suffered from severe bad writing-- although I did quite like Trial of a Time Lord.

You know there was one point where I REALLY wanted Hugh Laurie to pick up the role, but not now, he's too famous as another Doctor, and the role of The Doctor seems to be aimed towards younger males now.

David Tennant and Sylvester McCoy for me. Tennant just made the role his own while drawing from the best bits of all the other doctors. McCoy was the one I grew up watching. Tom Baker and Pertwee are probably tied second but I liked them all. Matt Smith's great so far.

The Doctor is getting younger! Before we know it, we'll have a 10 year-old running around with magic future tools, solving problems with the wonders of HUMAN POTENTIAL!
