I need a new adventure game
So shooting people's great in TF2 and Battlefield, and i'm ploughing through Prince of Persia and everything. But now i've a craving a really good adventure game, something with an epic story. The last new game (to me) that I played which really done it for me, was The Longest Journey. After which I played Dreamfall and near put my fist through the monitor at the ending
I spotted the Tex Murphy games on gog.com and i'm thinking about picking up The Pandora Directive, because it's always the one I hear people mention and it's got the best rating. What do you folk make of it? Do I need to play the other ones or anything like that?
Basically i'm looking for something with a good story, characters and actors who won't annoy the piss out of me* and with challenging but somewhat fair puzzles.
Sooo... whadya reckon guys, got anything for me?
*Ceville and Vampyre Story are STILL looking to be finished a year on from when I first bought em

Personally, I got bored with it about halfway through, and I'm a major Perry Rhodan nut... go figure.
np: David Bowie - Loving The Alien (The Best Of David Bowie 1980-1987)
I haven't played it, but it's not the easiest to get my hands on
Got it off eBay for £3, score!
Isn't Space Quest a bit on the silly side though? I saw it on gog (and Steam as well I think) but i'm more in the mood for something that'll leave me in awe and get me really involved in the story.
Also, I know I shouldn't be so particular, but bad voice acting will put me off an adventure game like that. I just can't feel involved if my character doesn't seem to feel involved. It put me off The Whispered World when I ehard the state of the English voice acting in the trailer
Have you brushed up on your Infocom adventures? For the most engrossing stories in those, there's always A Mind Forever Voyaging, Trinity, and(this last one may be a stretch) Bureaucracy.
Another personal favorite adventure game of mine, from a story perspective: I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
Have you played Machinarium yet? Granted, Machinarium is more of a "you're sucked into the atmosphere of the world" rather than being sucked into a story narrative, but depending on what you're actually looking for it could work.
Shadow of the Comet
Call of Cthulhu: Dark Corners of the Earth
5Days a Stranger, 7 Days a Skeptic, Trilby's Notes, and 6 Days a Sacrifice.
Broken Sword 1 and 2.
Ben Jordan 1-7 (the story is passable until episode 3, but is close to Z movie status, then gets up to around B movie status by Game 4, its not spectacular but it is a fun ride for maybe one or two playthroughs)
Missing (by Orchard L)
Fedora Spade (by Orchard L [comedy though])
The Dig
LOOM
Grim Fandango
Gabriel Knight 1 - 3
Laura Bow
Quest For Glory 2
If you want something epic, then Grim Fandango's your next game. Trust me (and everyone else who has already recommended it).
Shadow of the Comet (there is a talkie version)
Prisoner of ice
Broken Sword 1 and 2.
Runaway 1 (2 was a disaster for me, havent played the third one)
I've played all the Broken Sword games and love them to pieces, even the last two which were hardly excellent (bar Eammon 'up your alley' O'Mara who represents )
I got The Dig and Loom on Steam with two Indiana Jones games in a pack. i was really enjoying The Dig (digging it if you will, hurr hurr) but I found it really hard to be honest and set it down and never went back (got as far as the bone puzzle before throwing in the towel) i'll go back to it someday soon when i'm feeling less thick. Loom's still waiting for me but I want a wee break from Lucas adventures as I feel i'm depriving myself from a world of great games by other studios
Grim Fandango i've played and loved as well, but everything i'd say about that game's been said a thousand times before. Needless to say Film Noir + Mexican Foklore / Ugly Betty's uncle = Happy campers
I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream I picked up (with much to do) but have only tested it to see if it works. It looks really intriguing but i'm not in the mood for something quite that dark at the moment (i'm picky right)
Someday soon i'll unplug my internet and plow through all these games that rightly deserve my attention... then bore the arse off you guys about what I made of them, cos none of my mates do adventure games. They're actually (brace yourselves) hardcore Wii gamers, clocking up hour after hour on The Conduit online
Anyways, this post has went on far too long and I need sleep. I'll grab a game tomorrow which'll hopefully keep me in the house and my money away from the pub (i'm saving for my holidays, and £5 for a game beats £50 spent in the bar)
Any more suggestions are welcome of course , it's obvious i've not played a whole pile of adventure games that are out there.
And now without much further ado. Bed!!
Wow, really!? I've played both 1 & 2 and like them both equally (for different reasons). I haven't yet played 3, but I hear it's not as good as the first two, I still really look forward to playing it though.
May I ask why you thought 'Dream of the Turtle' was such a disaster?
http://machinarium.net/demo (in my opinion the best adventure of 2009)

Def gonna give some of the Infocom ones a go shortly down the line as I haven't played much of their stuff at all
WHile it is true that Space Quest is silly, the stories aren't that shallow. Space Quest IV in particular is quite epic and the story is fantastic. Probably the most serious-toned story in the series (even a bit dark). And my personal favourite. Each game feels like quite a ride, though, and truly an adventure. Going from place to place in SQ1 and SQ2 for instance and discovering new areas was quite fun. I wish I could wipe memory from my brain so I could reexperience these things...
Another game I found quite interesting (though some people bash it for some reason) is an adventure game from the Call of Cthulhu series called Prisoner of Ice. Made by Infogrames. Great game. Don't know where you could find it, though.
Infinity String
Project Xenophobe
Stargate Adventure
Reactor 09
I disliked it too.
a) the main character was a completely different person
b) it was half a game, stopped when barely anything had happened yet and nothing on the box or elsewhere could let you get prepared for that
c) it was full of filler (probably so the game could be stretched to two games)
d) characters from the first game kept being brought back for no apparent reason
I loved the first game and disliked the second one very much.
