New blood for adventure games

edited May 2010 in General Chat
I went to a birthday party for family today, and gave a copy of The Secret of Monkey Island:SE (with pixel fixes & Stan/Scumm Bar signs mods) to my nephew, who is turning 9yo this year.

To come right down to it. He and his younger brother LOVE it. They were laughing a ton today.

Chandler: "umm... how do I get over to Hook Island?"
Me: "You use that cable."
Chandler: "How do I do that?"
Me: *wide grin* "Using a rubber chicken... with a pulley in the middle."
Chandler and Logan: *looks of disbelief*
Me: "You need to go back to Melee Town first to get to Hook Island."

Later...
Guybrush: "Hmm... a rubber chicken with a pulley in the middle. What possible use could that have?"
*raucous laughter from the kids irl*

Later still...
Guybrush: I do have this deadly-looking chicken.
Smirk: Yes, swinging a rubber chicken with big metal pulley in it can be quite dangerous. BUT IT'S NOT A SWORD!!!
*more laughter irl*

Ahh... good times will be had. Adventure games have become popular again, and I'm happy.

Aw, that is way too cute! It's great that this game is still so accessible to such young kids. Way way too cool.

Yeah, the responsibility to give them MI2: SE when it comes out. :D

Also, I had the strange opportunity of telling Chandler, who is new to the game, that he tried things that I've never done before. Like, putting yellow flower petals into the fish and/or cooking the fish in the stew pot in the kitchen. I have cooked the meat before, but always gave the fish to George raw.

...and I've been playing the game off and on for close to 20 years.

I've recruited a friend to Monkey Island! Yay! Finally success in showing someone I know the awesomeness that is Monkey Island! He said he'd played Indy, and knew of Sam and Max, so that helped a bit.

    Wait..
    You can cook the fish??

Yeah, that's a shock to me too...I always cooked the meat but never even tried the fish.

Related to the topic though, I recently made my girlfriend play this game (she's a pretty big gamer already though) and so far she has found it hilarious. She laughed out loud to many of the insults as she picked them up from the pirates...it's pretty awesome to see people get the same original enjoyment of this game that I had when I first played it.

Yeah, it's great to have kids playing SMI!
Too bad I can't give it to my nephews, because every game they play has to be in DUTCH. :(

I still can't get over the fact that your nephew is called Chandler though... ;)

indeed. this would seem to severely limit ones gaming choices. Too bad none of these other languages would work:

But really, how old are they if they can only play games in Dutch?

My oldest nephew has just turned 9 and the other is 5.
They don't have any knowledge of the english language because almost everything in the last 10 years got dubbed.
This is entirely contradictory to how I grew up. I was playing Full Throttle at that age, and understanding most of the dialogue with it.

Yikes, 9 and no english knowledge?

I played MI2:LCR before that age...

My Son (age 7) has been playing Secret of Monkey Island on the PS3 he just started the last chapter... if it was not on the PS3 and easily accessible to him he probably would not have played so long..
