Do you sing?

Sometimes. I'm not especially good, but I seem to be able to fake it well enough to play certain characters in musicals. I'm hoping to work more on it.

So, I'm probably going to repeat somebody, seeing as I didn't read all the posts, but...

Sometimes, yeah. I don't sing out loud, but I sing alone and stuff. Or occasionally I burst out into song with my friends. It annoys them.

I sing all the time. I'm not that great, but that doesn't stop me, and it doesn't stop me from sharing the songs I sing either. :D

I was thinking about this some more today, and I don't think it depends on whether or not you're a musical person, or even whether or not you're a good singer.

One of my bros is really musical (he can play rockin' Ben Folds piano pieces by ear, which just awes me), and he's always walking around humming or scatting.

On the other hand, my cousin is also musical (he wrote this song, and that's him singing), but I've never noticed him singing or anything when doing everyday stuff.

I'm not sure what you mean exactly by "being a musical person", but if that's, well, having some kind of other of training in music, then i definitely agree.
Lots of people have no clue about what they're doing (i don't mean that in a pejorative or condescendant way at all) but that doesn't stop them from letting it out no matter when or when, while a lot of musician who actually know what's supposed to be going on will shy away as soon as they're asked to open their mouth.

I do think some kind of background has its importance, tho... I dunno, if you get used to see and hear people singing all the time (in the family for instance), seems logical that you won't really develop that block.

I know no one ever sang much at home, at least. Actually i'm just remembering my mom had more or less the same story as avistew's (her mom telling her to shut up cause her yelling around was "awful").
My father doesn't have much trouble with that, but he still won't do it often. He does a lot of theater though, so i guess that helped him get rid of of the whole block thing.

I only sing when I'm drunk or when I'm driving! My singing voice is terrible. Five years of whisky drinking and cigarette smoking has made my voice very limited. The only things I can imagine being capable of singing must be along the lines of Leonard Cohen, Elvis Presley or Johnny Cash.

The worst thing is that I might end up having to take singing lessons at school this year. I'm looking forward to it though. Maybe it'll end up being fun and interesting :)

That's my problem as well. Smoking destroyed my ability to have any sort of range.

On the bright side, it left me with a delightful metal growl/croak. :D I'd say it was a decent trade-off.

Let me introduce the both of you to Tom Waits.

    great exemple, lena.

I was more thinging of lemmy killminster, but tom waits should do as well :D

For some reason i never checked cohen out, but I wouldn't call Elvis and Johnny Cash the easiest to sing with a "destroyed by smoke and whiskey voice", though. And they're great guys to "imitate" too ;)

And all the smoking and drinking voice, that's what i'm actually working on

No one is gonna care, but i noticed i'm getting a bit better at singing along stuff when people are around (not such a new thing, but i guess having read this thread helped me realize this the other night). Definitely still a block, but not such a huge one in some situations.

I just realised I didn't share the fact that since my husband played 201, Lumpy has had a theme song.

    There was a giant kitty
Who had a very lumpy form
    He was the most ungrumpy
    Kitty that was ever born
    Even Hurricane Kitty
Was scared to let him join her games
And if you want to meet him
You just have to shout his name
    (Hi, Lumpy!)

As soon as we start singing or whistling it, he starts purring. And if you don't say "Hi, Lumpy!" in the end, he just looks at you like he's saying "what are you waiting for?"
    It's very cute.

(Hurricane Kitty, aka Our Little Bundle of Destruction, aka Our Little Tornado aka Sissi is our other cat. He's twice her size, so she IS scared of letting him join her games).

I like to sing and start to sing when ever I feel like it, and do find my self quite good. Although my family don't seem to agree :p

Oh yeah, Tom Waits is awesome. I'd probably implode or something if I tried to imitate Lemmy's singing though :D

    Great choice in music, Lena!
Though I prefer his earlier work.

    One of my favorites.

I decided to face my shyness head-on and post a couple of my attempts at singing:

Eat Me, Drink Me - Marilyn Manson (it says American Pie, but only because I needed to use a custom instrumental)

Put Your Lights On - Everlast

I normally don't put these songs where they can be traced back to me, and especially not in places where I feel like I know some of the members, but I've got rum in me and I'm feeling adventurous. (Note: I suck. You've been warned.)

Can't you hear the wind blow?
We don't like the King of Town
    Makin' people's heads explode. o/~

Seems like the perfect introduction to the guy to someone who wouldn't know him ;)
But my personal favourite will always be that one :

I vaguely remember pissing everyone off at new year's eve by playing it over and over while drunk

I only ever sing when performing really - including karaoke. I can sing in tune and read music and all that, but personally I don't like my actual voice (some people do, but I don't XD).
  • edited May 2010
I like my voice the way I hear it. I can't stand the stupid not-from-inside-my-head voice though. Plus my accent sounds different!
I really dislike seeing videos of me, too.

Okay, so i've checked them out now ;)

I'm really not a fan of the whole "mansonesque" thing anymore, but nice job on it, you do convey something and that's not an easy job :)
Puts your lights on reminds me of demented are go for some strange reason (even though it doesn't sound anything like them. You might want to check them out if you're into "crazy destroyed voices, by the way ;)).

Okay, so i finally decided to give singing in public a try, here's how it ended up :

A few mistakes here and there, but tell me what you guys think

:D Thanks. I find Manson easier to sing than anything, since the songs carry a lot of meaning for me, and I can sing the lyrics like I mean them. The song I posted isn't a good example of that due to the abstract message, but it serves it's purpose.

I'm tempted to post my rendition of "Man, I Feel Like A Woman" for the lulz, but I'm not that cruel. :p

    Yes. Yes you did.

But so did I and I found it much more amusing than being Rickroll'd.:D

The yodelling guy was awesome, we need more of that sort of thing!

I sing all the time, but sometimes I get concious about it because I think i'm pissing people off

teehee, yodel is just so great :p

I love to sing! I took lessons all through college. So theatre type singing. I enter local contests occasionally if they have cash prizes.

But I sing all the time, in the car, in my house, in the park, down the street, when it's raining, when it's sunny. I think I'm both an entertainment and annoyance to my friends. :p

I love listening to other people sing too, it's great to hear people sing when they are completely carefree.

Edit: I really, really want to learn how to yodel! I need to find a how-to yodeling guide.
