Will you replay 'Tales' in 10 years?

(Note: Please don't turn this into a "I hate Escape" thread)

I first played MI1 when I was 7.

I played MI2 when I was 8.

MI3 I watched the development of, I remember watching the trailer and trying to download the 20MB demo over dial up (I eventually just bought the PC Gamer with the demo on the disc - I still have magazine in a box with LeChuck on the cover). I finally played it when I was 12 or 13 when it came out.

MI4 I remember watching E3 news and being shocked by the first screen shot. I played it the day it came out when I was 15.

Now I'm 24, and I watched the details leak out about Tales from day one and left work early for Episode 1 to be released. Tales came out and I played it. I enjoyed it very much. I play all the first four Monkey Island games at least once a year (yes, even Escape), and I see myself doing do for many years to come. I'm sure many of us are the same way with re-playing these games. I can't count how many times I've played them...But will I play Tales once a year as well? Probably not. I might replay it before season 2 inevitably comes out...but will I see it with the same love and affection of the first four games? No.

I think it has something to do my age now, and nostalgia: wanting to relive part of my child hood. I love the series, and I can't wait for season 2 of Tales. But does Tales hold the same place in my heart? No. Will I add it into my re-play mix of the first four each year? No. Do I see myself still loading it up ten years from now? Probably not.

What do you all think?

Ask me again in ten years.
I have no idea where I'll live, what I'll do, if I'll have time to play games, if I'll still have my DVD, if I'll have access to the Internet or even to a computer, etc, etc in ten years.
So, whether I'll be playing a specific game? No clue.

I imagine I will play them once a year or so... I play all the old ones still.... same with Sam & Max....

I guess I wasn't curious about the literal aspect of it. I guess I'm wondering if it impacted you the same way as the originals. Maybe it was a poorly written post.

I think I am harder to impress now then when the first Monkey Island games came out... when I first played them it was magic... its harder to stand out now a days.. though.

i think i will do! I regret the day i broke those cd's i got along with my audio system. Monkey island is my all time favorite game. It holds sentimental value to me and sometimes i feel like the sudden urge to replay. When MI2:LR SE comes out i will definetly play all from Mi1 to TOMI!

Maybe I was just being a smartass.

Really, the only one I've replayed several times is Curse, and my last replay was... ten years ago?
I might replay MI1 and MI2 soon, and I haven't played them in... maybe 15 years.
If I replay Tales in 10 years, it's likely I wouldn't have played it in the meantime.

To answer your rephrased question, no, it didn't impact me in the same way as the previous ones (not sure what you mean by "originals". Either Secret was the only original or they all are). I liked bits and pieces of it but I don't really see myself replaying the whole thing. I only see myself replaying Chapter 4, really, and only because of Stan.
Stan is the one thing I liked better in Tales than in any of the other games. Tales Stan actually made me appreciate the previous Stans better.

I'm looking forward to the commentaries and bonuses though. These I can see myself playing over and over again.

I definitely will, I've already replayed ToMI several times. When I replay the earlier games, I usually play all of them in a row except Escape, and the only reason I don't play Escape is that even with the patches and special launcher, it keeps crashing my PC. (if Steam releases a copy that'll actually work on Windows 7, I'll definitely be buying it) So unless ToMI suffers from the same compatibility issues, it'll get played just the same as the others.

If it helps, I would have made a very similar post. Not sure if that would make you feel better or worse about it, though. :D

I honestly don't know. I've played Secret and LeChuck's Revenge probably a grand total of three times in my life, five max. I've played Curse twice, once when it came out and once before Tales arrived, same with Escape.

I LOVED the Sam and Max seasons, but I probably won't replay them for some time. Same with Tales, I think.

Yeah, I generally replay adventures after several years, and I see why not with ToMI.

    I'm not sure. Possibly. Probably?

I wonder what kind of games TTG will be making in 10 years
  • edited May 2010
I'm sure I will. Especially when I get a better computer that can handle the graphics better.

I replay SMI and LR the most, followed closely by CMI. And I even play EMI when I do my yearly Play Every Monkey Island Game in Order day. So I'm sure I'll be playing Tales 10 years from now too. Probably about as often as CMI.

I even replayed EMI, but most of all I replay MI2. I doubt that will change - but I will probably still play ToMI in ten years. Mainly because it's a part of a series, and I'll probably play through the whole series every now and then.

In ten years, our brains will all be wired directly into the Internet with skintennas and genetically modified dinosaurs will rule the earth.* So, of course I will be playing Tales again!:D

The dinosaurs will have gotten boring by then.

    *I called it.

I think without question (or without unforseen circumstances...like I lose all sense of humor. Or die. Or my wife and I end up having octuplets and can't afford to eat, let alone buy computers. Or Obamacare causes the apocalypse) then yes, I will. It's classic and truly enjoyable, like the first three.

I'd play Tales everyday if I could.
  • edited May 2010
I reckon I'll still be playing it in 10 years. I enjoyed Tales just as much as a lot of much older adventures games and I'm still playing and loving those ones. :)

(Hey, I played my first Atari game when I was about 3, and I still play that on emulators every once in a while!)

I have replayed it a few times already, so I will definitely play it again in 10 years, and some times in between.

The game is too good to just be played once and then put on the shelf.

Absolutely! I try to replay games at least once every other year or so. Plus, I figure that in ten years I'll probably have kids, or neices and nephews, or godkids, and I'm going to make damn sure that they grow up with ALL the Monkey Island games.
  • edited May 2010
Judging by what has happened this far, I've played
1995: SOMI (borrowed from my nephew)
1999: MI2 and CMI (bought the bounty pack)
2002: EMI (didn't get a good computer before that time, but bought it in 2000.)
2008: A little of all of them.
2009: SOMI:SE and Tales (preorder) I was thinking of playing MI2 again, but then I heard about the special edition, so I'm going to wait a little longer :D

My sister on the other hand, just LOVES CMI and plays it once a month or something, and has so for 8 years now. She has really become an expert on that game.

But back to topic, Tales are so far my favorite of all the MI games, so I will probably play it just for fun next year already. Or maybe in order.

I don't really replay adventure games because I always remember every riddle and that takes the fun out of it... sadly...

Sometimes it's good to have a horrible memory.
Not so much as Max though...

he saves money on his kids birthdays by forgetting them.

I've played through Tales 3 1/2 times already, but that is only because I'm working on a video review/comparison. I have always felt CMI has more replay value just because of how quickly I can play through it now, and how the story doesn't seem crippled by dated humor like many comedies tend to. I can play through it and enjoy it no differently than rewatching a favorite movie.

However, I don't see myself playing Tales years down the road like CMI for a few reasons. One reason being that I doubt the game will run on future operating systems. I guess the Wii version will linger around my house, but the load times and visual glitches make the game almost unbearable to play. Only reason I can still play CMI is because of SCUMM VM. Unless of course LucasArts remakes CMI, which I can only hope they don't, or if they do that they just make the graphics High res instead of changing the art style. The other reason I don't see myself playing tales down the road is because the humor in tales wasn't as well written for most of the episodes. I see some jokes becoming dated, others becoming old, and the plot doesn't feel as smooth when playing the whole thing through. Maybe if they merged the 5 episodes into one solid game the whole smooth transition thing would feel better, but still wouldn't overcome the other problems I had with it. Escape from Monkey Island suffered from the same problems too...

I've replayed them all except for efmi.
I originally played it on my sons ps and once I got over the clunky 3d graphics and fiddly controls I grew to love it as much as any other mi game.
I've tried the demo on my pc though and found it almost impossible to control.
Its the one game of the series that I would love to see updated as its the only one that I don't remember the puzzles off by heart.

Yes. No. I said no meaning yes.

Yes. I've replayed other MI games several times, except EMI which maybe I replayed once if at all.

I find I tend to revisit the games every few years. I'm playing through MI:SE again right now though, and I've sort of had an urge to revisit ToMI.

I played CMI about a year or two ago, so I'll probably go back to that one in a year or so.

EMI is the only one I haven't felt a strong urge to return to (I played it through twice when it came out, I believe).

As for MI2, it's the one I most like going back to and I've been itching for it - waiting for the SE, though.

Soooo, to answer your question, yes - I expect I will return to Tales, probably sometime after the next ToMI game is announced, assuming it ever is.

I will certainly replay ToMI again, I'll probably play it annually! It's my equal favourite Monkey Island game - on par with Curse.

I'm probably going to start my second playthrough tomorrow. I can see it sifting into my regular rotation of replays.

I'll replay it once the DVD shows up.

So yes, I will replay it in 10 years. (Maybe 20 at this rate)

I replay the games fairly often, and I adore tales, and have already replayed it since it came out. That being said, i can't see replaying it as often as i just load up LR or CMI, being that those two in particular have some of my favorite monkey moments.

I'm hoping in 10 years time I'll have something portable that will play it. I love playing adventure games on the bus.
  • edited June 2010
I am thinking of doing a third replay (fourth really) some time later this year... probably after LCR Special Edition is out, so I do a full series replay.
  • edited June 2010
Replay it in ten years? Hell, I'll probably replay it in two years.
