Eschalon Book II

edited May 2010 in General Chat
I've once played Book I and it was a very addictive experience. If you're into old skool RolePlayingGames like the wonderful Ultima games, then you'll definately want to give this one a try (Win available now, OSX and Linux following:

I love the Eschalon games! They almost feel less like games than as a love letter to the RPGs of old. The good ones.

    Yes i fully agree.

I don't know all the big roleplaying games which have been releasead the last couple of years sucked. More action and gfx oriented but without any soul at all. It seems like the designers never grocked what role playing games are about. Some of the last really good rpgs i can remember for instance are Ultima 9, The Bard's Tale, Eschalon Book 1, and the last third of Neverwinter Nights.

Bioware completely dissapointed with their latest games, probably focussed on a younger audience and multiplayer generally isn't my thing.

Those are timeless masterpieces with a soul:

What of Morrowind? Or Gothic 1 and 2? Perhaps The Witcher, after the Enhanced Edition improvements? I know it's a bit juvenile, but I liked it.

Not really, all these games have their own flaws. You can get tons of half baked RPGs, everything in the 60-80% regions, but really good ones are extremely seldom.

If you're into old-school RPGs, check out Spiderweb Software. Jeff Vogel's been cranking out hand-crafted RPGs for ages now.

There are sizable demos available for all of his games.

I have too confess that i never tried them out due to the extremley poor gfx. Heck, even the Ultima 2 sprites did a way better job. Are the games really worth it?

Depends on what you're looking for in an RPG. Go ahead and download one of the demos to see what they're like.

The graphics have been slowly improving (compare the first and last Avernum games), but they'll never look like a game from EA or Activision.

They're not for everyone, but Jeff has been making a living off of them for over 15 years, so he's doing something right.

I'm not sure if i would dare using the word improvement but i'll save a link to come back later when there is time. It's hard to get into it, as from a brief observation i get distracted by the gfx. Weird why he has choosen this way, as you can do a whole lot better with a little bit more of abstraction. Anyway thanks for the tip.
