ToMI: episode 1... the map doesn't work

I'm following the map based on animal sounds to get to the treasure spot but it's leading me to go in circles. I even followed a guide to the tee (which gave the same directions I was already using) with no luck.

As dictated by the in-game map, from the wishing well I go right (boar sound), then right again (monkey sound), then up (bee sound) and everytime I end up back at the wishing well.

I tried continuing the map instructions from there but obviously that hasn't succeeded either.

I even started a new game from scratch and the problem is still exactly the same.

Please help.

    Out of curiosity, before you started following the map's directions, did you
    use it on the well
    ?
