Only thing I want is Sonic Adventure 3. You can say that I want them to go back to there roots (3D Roots at least), but that is honestly the only hope that I have for the franchise.
I'm still pulling for Sonic Colors, don't get me wrong, but if the last couple of games are any indication... Gathering dust it will be...
I think the main problem is SonicTeam seem to be unable to make a decent 3D Sonic game now and added to the fact that so many people wanted a 2D Sonic game they obviously decided to try something new, which is in fact something old.
I'm looking forward to Sonic 4. Sure, it just looks like the first game but I think that'll just be an introductory 'nostalgia' level.
The main problem with the Sonic Team is that they don't give a damn anymore. They had an iconic character like Sonic the Hedgehog but they didn't know how to use him properly, so starting from Sonic Heroes they tried to go with the same ol' 3D engine over and over and added really lame storylines to their games just to sell the games to the kiddies that like Sonic the Hedgehog, fighting in a DBZ-ish style. They were just being lazy with both plot and gameplay.
And they ARE still lazy, since now they're just going with their fan feedback. Whatever THEY think of is purely unimaginative (Werehog), and they don't even feel like they have to think for theirselves while fans can do it. Even a guy from Sonic Team said "We're making Sonic 4 episodic. Why? For fan feedback. A fan says Sonic is too slow? We're speedin' him up. Clunky animations? We work on that. Needs more cowbell? Fuck it, let's make a level entirely composed of cowbells" during an interview. They don't really want to bother theirselves but still be able to make money from Sonic. It's disrespecting.
Nostalgia level? I say "people like this stage, so we remade it, FOR FANS!!! also we didn't want to bother ourselves designing a new stage". Man I HATE Green Hill zone. Sure it was good for the first time, but it's primitive and linear compared to most of other zones. Heck, even zones seen in Advance titles are better than that. If they wanted to remake a level, I think they should've remade Angel Island zone in Sonic 3.
My only concern so far is that leaked footage of the mine cart that you control by rotating the screen.
And I actually like that stage. Because it is new, because they TRY doing something THEY think of. Surely it doesn't look like Sonic, but it still makes use of the feel of MOMENTUM like how the old Sonic games did, and its design is actually not that confusing. Whoever is controlling Sonic on that leaked video has no gaming talent though, that may be why people hated the level without even playing it once.

That's a decent point, I hadn't considered the skill level of the player.
I thought the whole sword thing worked out pretty well. The werehog sucks though. I can't complain about the rest of Unleashed.
The worst offender is Sonic Adventure. Big the Cat. Seriously, It's a Sonic game. They decided to put in one charater who has no speed at all and only has small arenas where he has to fish for a FROG. Oh and if you fail to get a fish you had you lose a life.
I have yet to get past the first stage of Big's story because of glitches and the dang frog WILL NOT stay on the hook for any amount of time. All of the others I can get complete.
Really, whose bright idea was it to put a fishing mode in a sonic game
I loved Bigs the Cat and his fishing games. I found them way too easy though.
Does anyone know the answer to this? WHY did they?
Because in Japan his name was always just Eggman. They decided to switch to his Japanese name. There.
As for topic (I seem to be late to the party) I like the new characters, but I don't really like Sonic anymore. His personality is not to my liking. Tails I like and the rest of the crew too.
But as for the games are now, I never get excited for them. It's not the gimmicks that ruin it for me. It's just Sonic. Unlike Mario who doesn't seem to be so full of him self I can get excited for. Plus, with new Mario games (except NSMB) it doesn't feel like I'm playing the same old game each time with horrible camera angles and stupid "witty" lines from a character so stuck up it's annoying.
Sure Mario doesn't speak, maybe that's why I'm drawn to him.
Its not out yet so we dont know if its good yet. It was like how people said zelda windwaker was going to bomb without even playing it(and it DID NOT bomb)

Hmm... 2D sonic is too different to compare with Mario, although I thing Mario had better level design. It might just be me...
It's not you. The majority of people simply smypathizes Mario better, and I can't argue with that. Yet still, it's more than apparent to me that the earliest Sonic titles (Sonic 1, 2 and 3&K in Genesis; not the Game Gear ones) have so many convoluted, detailed levels with bright graphics that serves so many different obstacles, varying stage elements and ways of completing a level; compared to Mario's rather bland (but enjoyable to play through) levels, such as in SMB3; "LOOK IT'S BIG WORLD EVERYTHING IS BIG YOU SMALL" or "LOOK A LOT OF BULLET BILLS IT'S DIFFERENT BECAUSE THE PREVIOUS LEVELS HAD LESS BULLET BILLS".

Hey just remeber mario had more better background in later games like 64 and sunshine.

Sonic looked better.... but the levels were not as good as mario in my opinion...
For the love of shit... can we just let the 16 bit wars RIP? They ended years ago, but people won't just let it go.
To be fair it's really more a discussion than a effluence flinging ape fight at this stage
I def preffered Sonic over Mario in the 16-bit era, but I think that's cos I was young and Sonic was fast and had attitude... plus I only got to play SNES at my cousins house as all my friends owned Mega Drives.

I always felt Sonic stages to be overly cluttered in some parts and vastly empty in others. I enjoy Sonic 2D games but ugh those stages. And like they had any variety either. "Eh, add water and spikes everywhere, last stage had less water, and less spikes!" "Okay, put a loop in the stage here, last stage had a loop about 4 seconds ahead of here." And don't forget playing the same stage 2-3 times due to the acts with very little alterations. Those descriptions above for their actual stages not just the acts.
Level design sucked in both, end. It was the same run right. They just had to change the layout a bit to make it fun for everyone. Sonic however overly cluttered their stages or left them empty for a while that is was nothing but holding right for a good while untill you hit a wall or the stage ended.

once again we must still wait until it is released.
almost all sonic games are "similar"(sonic unleashed was similar to sonic 1-3 with werehog stages concluded which made the game not a big hit) it is what they are not telling us that may or may not bomb. If episodic and graphics is the only thing then fine it may be good but then maybe not
Also does anyone know the release date for episode 1 or not.
EDIT:turns out they delayed episode 1 to change the game a bit by actualy listening to the fans ideas. This could be interesting how that goes.

Obviously you couldn't get the point of the placement of spikes and other stuff. Eugh... Let me put it this way. Every level has a theme. Desert, launch base, watery world, etc. Because of that, slopes-mobs-general level gimmicks vary, and because of THAT; not only the expectancy of where you'll land on will be reduced to zero, but it'll piss you to find out that even though you were given a chance to hit a button to prevent it, you just hit a spike because you didn't know it was on your way and developers expected you to hit it in your first (sometimes second, or even other tries, depends on the trickiness of the situation). What does it add? Challenge.
Now why Sonic is superior to Mario there? To prevent death in a Mario game, you have to jump high enough, or in time, to left to right. It also applies in Sonic 1. It basically scrolls left to right, and I admit it's a spikefest just to make it hard. In Sonic 3, levels don't go left to right. They give you multiple ways of finishing a level. They give you different stage hazards (SMB3 has it too, though, bossfights are the same, so booyah!). They give you a sense of momentum, to jump away from your death from cleverly placed spikes or badniks or pits with plausible timing. Check any Sonic 3 level. All are masterpieces; convoluted, clever, awarding you after finding secret places, and gives YOU the power of enjoying and beating the level. Mario is not like that. It's not fast enough, you get what you expect, momentum is limited with Mario slowing down after you let go of your "walk right" button. So? They can't surprise you, so to be able to make it difficult, just increase mob/pit count. It's lineer too, it just feels like the level is playing with you instead.
EDIT:turns out they delayed episode 1 to change the game a bit by actualy listening to the fans ideas. This could be interesting how that goes.
Actually? They're listening to those stupid fan feedback for too long, starting right after the abomination of unimaginative, unresponsive Sonic 06! It was a game that only THEY wrote out of their asses, I know, they had to listen to fans a little. That game failed, okay, and it's when fans started to go "go back to rooootz". They tried to actually give the feel of going back to the roots by listening to those people, but they kept adding different things that may still improve the series a little. And one of those ideas was the Werehog. People keep bashing it, as if going completely back to the first game is the only thing that can save the franchise (it's the most idiotic idea ever, even more than Werehog itself) and everything opposing this just plain sucks. But Werehog actually has a good idea behind it. The only thing it suffered from its that its lack of imagination, I mean, it's just the same old cliché a guy good going bad by turning into a werewolf. Oh and its stages sucked. But it doesn't mean adding SOMETHING to the old mix is BAD. Too bad, it eventually got bad reviews. So they thought "wow, our fans want what they want and what they want only, and we're only their slaves working for money, so let's just do that". What happens next? Sonic 4 is born.
Now what are they doing? They literally gave all their game-making equipment away to a bunch of bickering, whiny, stupid fans that doesn't know shit about coding or marketing. They think they just want to play the same game they played years ago. Oh and, it doesn't end there. Developers have a tiny fragment of regret after raping the long running franchise and they still want to add THEIR taste into the game; and the one we're able to see so far is the mine kart section. The feedback on it? Not surprisingly, OUTRAGE! How DARE they try putting something so UN-SONIC that differs from the same fucking game that was released in 1991? Well, I think some people just have to think a little. I found that stage pretty cool, and better; different. Challenging, too.
tl;dr, Ray-the-Sun, don't you mock WEREHOG MINEKARTS. They're trying to add something different so that you won't RIP YOURSELF OFF to buy the same game you played before.
Looking at the most recent footage, they seem to have made some small improvements. The jumping is a lot better, more Sonic-like, and the 'camera' is further away. All positive.
I found it really interesting that the person who did the music only used 8 notes like they did in the 90s. No wonder it gives me insta-nostalgia.
I've always found Sonic games to be easier. When Sonic 3 came out first time I had absolutely zero problems playing it. When I was like 4 I beat Sonic 2 aswell, once again, no problem playing or beating the game. The only stage to give me problems was the stupid machine stage which got 3 acts. My problem with that stage was it was a boring one. Sonic has always been very easy to me. Those spikes don't add a challenge they add a slight annoyance.
Now Mario was easy too, however atleast with Mario they didn't use crappy little annoyances to make the stage "harder". And Sonic all you have to do is hold right and jump every 2-6 seconds (depends on the stage) and you never get hit. I had learned that from a friend of mine who was outrageously into Sonic. He showed me that where exactly every baddie will be on screen when you first get there and such so you can simply avoid them and jump over with zero problem. Now, this was about two years ago. So, I didn't use this method when I was younger but I still found the games to be easy. The only hard parts I found were the chaos emerald bonus stages, and I cleared themwith ease too. I just found them harder then the stages (except Sonic 3, some of those got hard).
I also liked the stage designs for Mario better, along with the characters and everything.
Now I'm not saying Mario isn't easy and had the greatest stage setups, I just found it better without an INYOURFACE character and stupid speed gimmick. I also like the variations of powerups Mario got. For me I understand both games have very basic platformer levels, because that's what they are. They're both basic platformers. I don't try to act like Mario had better level design, and I don't try to act like Sonic did either. They both had good level designs for their times, for platformers. For me, I love the look, feel, and everything about Mario better. It had much better character to the world, to me. There's no annoying characters that try to be hip, it's not filled with stupid spike traps that do nothing, mostly because the spike traps are ABOVE land and you simply run into them and they stop you from moving for a second then you jump over them and keep running.
There were only 3 standable characters to me in the Sonic uni. They were Tails, Biggs, and Amy. While other then Wario, I like all characters in the Mario uni.
I think the new trailer for Sonic Colors looks fantastic. And this is coming from someone who hasn't liked a 3D Sonic game since Adventure 2.
Had a peek, just looks like the day stages in Sonic Unleashed. Not bad though. Haven't got a Wii but I'll probably pick up the DS release if it reviews well.
If sonic colours is anything the same as Unleashed's day stages (same engine), I'll give it a pass. Those stages just felt like you were holding down left and occasionally pressing a button with no thought at all.
