Pirate vs Ninja

edited July 2010 in General Chat
Let me preface this by saying I am aware that a Pirate vs Ninja poll on a forum where so many Monkey Island fans hang out is likely to be as one sided as boxing match between Muhammad Ali and my grandmother but I'm going to ask anyway.

What I'd most like to know is what do you find most enamoring about your choice? (Or, if you selected one of the other options, why?)

Considering Ali is 68 and has Parkinson's, I'd say your grandmother could probably put up a decent fight against him. :p

Who's the heathen who voted ninja? D:<

    Anarchy!

Wait, so if voting ninja is the anarchist move, and anarchy is a pirate trait...

I love and have loved Ninjas since I played The Last Ninja on my C64 back in the days. I wish there were more games with proper ninjas. Ninja Gaiden is a great game, but I want more adventure and more stealthy than hack'n'slash games. Plus, I'm not interested in monsters and 1 vs a million fights. I prefer 1 on 1 fights, like in the Last Ninja series, and being able to avoid the fights.

Pirates I've loved since I played Monkey Island 1 on my Amiga. No need to give any more reason than that here on this forum I think.

I voted for both... I love Ninjas and Pirates equally as much but for different reasons. I don't really want to choose one over the other - that would be like choosing my son over my daughter or vice versa.

Gotta go with ninjas. I do love a bit o' stealth with my wholesale slaughter.

I've always been on the ninja side of the war. Pirates rush at you and announce their presence. With ninjas you never know they are there.

To quote Dr. McNinja... "Maybe the Ninja/Pirate feud is the worst most played out thing ever."

    I've to agree.
    I voted neither.

    That's because ninjas are cowards.

Used to be ninja until I joined this forum. You get turned over to the other side fairly quickly.

Pirates! Pirates are the best. Ninja's... Ick.

Well, Pirates have guns. And we all know what happens to people bringing knives to a gunfight -
    they get shot... :P

    Thus, Pirates win.

If you look good and hard at either side historically there's a lot of killing and stuff I prefer to stay away from, so I'm going to have to vote for the one that I enjoy dressing up as the most-- pirates! Come on, parrots and cool hats versus all black!

I couldn't resist. Although I do remain partial to the old swashbuckling.

I wonder if this long winded debate has to due with the popularity of anime, coinciding with movies like Pirates of the Caribbean among other things.

I think is has a lot to do with that bizarre place known as 4chan, the progenitor of 99% of stupid internet memes.

4chan's not bizzare. It's just open.

Its a stupid argument that two fan bases use so they can parade their plumage while bashing the other side for no reason. Comparing Pirates and Ninjas is like comparing Chefs and Big game hunters.

    Besides, cowboys are way cooler.

To be fair, 4chan isn't all /b/. Some of the other boards really aren't all that bad. I frequent /x/ quite often, and I've gotten into some pretty nice conversations there.

Or /adv/ is fun, and so is cooking.

The thing I hate most about /b/ is that it's the exact opposite of open. Most frequent users are so closed minded, it's unbelievable. All I EVER see on that website are things along the lines of "this place used to be cool before all you newfags came along", "you noobs obviously don't get the elite group that is /b/", "i hate original humour and vow with every bone in my body to destroy it".

I'd rather not visit any board that is within a click or two from people who spend their whole day posting

Hearing stories about people that died because of their own stupidity is entirely different than staring at pictures of random corpses.

Also, you seem to be obsessed with things I've said in the past, it's kind of creepy. Seriously, that thread was locked 8 months ago, that's approximately a decade in internet time. Please stop caring so much about what I post on an internet forum.

That's because people on /b/ are either 12 and think they know everything or trolls. And Trolls will do anything to piss anyone off.

Go to a blue board and you never seen any of that.

It is Dr. McNinja, which I linked to earlier. It's probably the best webcomic ever. :D

And to answer your question, he is an Irish Ninja who is also a Doctor. Or maybe the other way around.

I actually have Dr. McNinja in my bookmarks of webcomics I'm considering taking up, but I haven't even nearly had enough time for an archive binge lately. Right now, I think there's 23 comics on the waiting list. Which actually seems like a larger number once I compare it to the 58 I currently read. Quite a few of those 58 don't really update regularly, though.

Yep, it sounds rather random pairing. I would like to hear why pirates are compared to ninjas, because these groups don't have anything in common?

I know bit about historical ninjas and there are interesting stories, but often the first thing which comes to my mind when I think of ninjas is cheap martial arts movies.

So, I voted for pirates. But I don't support current Somali pirates or anything like that, but instead I like to think that my vote goes to the Caribbean pirates of the early modern era, which are often depicted in the popular fiction. Biographies of the real historical pirates are quite fascinating at times, although I assume that some of their deeds are just tall tales (which is quite often true also in the case of the Western heroes).

In any case I also think that old pirate movies (like those of Errol Flynn) and Monkey Island games are better than low budget ninja films and arcade ninja games. However my favourite group of heroes are the knights. I'm huge fan of stuff like the Arthurian cycle, chanson de geste and crusader chronicles.

Sounds disgusting. Personally I like the "family friendly" boards and rarely go to the darker sections of the Internet, because vulgarity just isn't cool. Sometimes I think I'm getting old, because 15 years ago I might have thought that shocking = fun, but these days I have grown tired to such things. I still like to watch violent horror or action movies and such, but as I have seen badly injured and brutally dead people in RL I don't find images of the real bodies fun.
