What are the Natural Flavors?

edited July 2010 in General Chat
So I was just looking at my 12 can pack of Coca-Cola, and it says "No Artificial Flavors". So I looked at the nutritional facts and all it says is the same old junk in a soda, along with "Natural Flavors".

What the hell? Is this really okay to not even describe the flavors? I mean sure, with Artificial Flavors you don't really care that much of what's in it, but come on! If you just say "Natural Flavors", I can seriously doubt that it is
"natural".

That means it's stuff found in nature. They don't always specify because it's sometimes gross. For instance "natural colouring" is sometimes crushed bugs and stuff.
It might just be that there is lots and they don't want to specify everything though. I guess.

Cocaine and caffeine. The rest is a trade secret.

    Sugar.... its sugar flavored.

    Oh, Coca-cola, I didn't read that.
Probably a mix of stuff like vanilla, lemon, caramel, stuff like that. But yeah, they're keeping it secret more to prevent (more) (better) copies than because it's gross, I'd say.

..and why couldn't they at least say the vanilla, lemon, and caramel part?

A lot of people don't realize, but one of the main herbal flavors in root beer is wintergreen. Learning where your food comes from is fun! (and occasionally terrifying)

Yeah, it surprised me recently to discover that Fanta can contain fish. Shame, I liked Fanta.

It's just for the gelatin, which jello is made of. I don't see the issue unless you're a vegan.

I always told my friends that root beer tasted like toothpaste but no one ever believed me. Ha! Now I have proof!

I'd go with this as I've bought natural coca cola before and that was the difference. It's the way it used to be made, but damn...that sugar is STRONG

Yeah, that's my point. Panna cotta also uses gelatin, and that stuff is amazing.

Actually modern day coca cola only has trace amounts of the cola nut.

Isn't there caramel falvouring floating about in coke somewhere?
  • edited July 2010
The original natural flavor was cocaine. As for what it is nowadays, I'd say crap, because that's sort of what it tastes like . . .

Cocaine wasn't the actual flavor. That's just plain silly to say. :p

    You'd be surprised.

My favorite flavors are nicotine, caffeine, alcohol and bacon. Now when are they gonna make a cola with those flavors?

I can almost guarantee that Bacon-Cola is out there. Now Nico-Alco-Bacon Cola, don't get your hopes up. But you may have given me the flavors for my ficitional cola, Diet Blue. (That came from a plan from an old thing for dyeing a wig blue of something. I said Dye it blue, of course.)

I'm not saying that it wasn't in there, I'm just sayin' that it certainty wasn't implemented for flavor purposes.

Those Bio Colas offer the information about their ingredients on the flasks.

As for Coca Cola there have been quite some chemcial analysis and they said it's water, sugar (or sugar replacement), carbonic acid, colourant E150, acidifier E338, phosphor acid, coffein, natural falvours of ginger, orange blossom, algarroba, lime hull and extracts of the cola nut.

No, not exactly tiny, but no offense taken. I think I've found a good balance between being fit and having a fair chance at the pizza roll challenge.
    Also...

Nice. Would definitely try one of those if any grocery stores around here supplied it. Doesn't seem to be for real though. :(

Coca Cola used to contain cocaine, albeit in small amounts, so it would be addictive. That was before it was illegal, mind.
  • edited July 2010
Yeah, I didn't deny that. I just said that it wasn't for flavor purposes. And it was because coca cola was originally sold as a medicinal tonic and cocaine was thought to be highly medicinal back then. It wasn't to make people addicted to it, though that might have contributed to its success.
