You reminded me to put: Tag: The Power of Paint: A first person action game, which uses some of the mechanics from portal 2 (the guys who made it are working for Valve).
As well as this, there's pretty much any game by Yahtzee. Most are adventures, although one's a sort of Elite-style space adventure with adventure bits, and another's a 2D platformer ala Flashback or Another World. They're also all brilliant. All available at his site here. Make sure you grab the special editions if possible. They're free now, so there's no reason not to.
Star Control 2 The Ur-Quan Masters
Simon Tatham's Portable Puzzle Collection
Deadly Rooms Of Death: Architect's Edition
np: Autechre - Cep puiqMX (Move Of Ten)
Adam Cadre's Interactive Fiction games range from poor to brilliant. They are all, at the very least, extremely interesting and worth a look just to revel in the ideas present.
Oh hey, almost forgot about Bow Street Runner.
Joystiq recently did a story on 0 AD. I haven't played it myself, but I'm interested in giving it a shot.
