the reason i love this game sooo much is not because of how violent or disturbing it got (tim burton has nothing on american mcgee) but that you could get as much or as little of the incredible storyline you wanted depending on how willing you were to delve into the casebook
in a perfect world tim burton's alice would have never been made and the movie version of american mcgee's alice would have been released instead of being cancelled
Except Pee Wee of course. HAA HAA!
Have you ever seen Ed Wood or Big Fish? Those films are a little less stereotypically Tim Burton-y, but they're some of his better films, I think.
Aaaanyway, yeah. Having never played Alice myself, I can't really comment all that much, I guess, but it always looked like one of the better attempts at grimdarking a children's story to me. Hopefully with this sequel, the first one will get re-released too on Steam or something so I can give it a shot.
i'm personally wishing for an updated version of american mcgee's alice to be released before alice: madness returns... not gonna happen probibly, but a guy can dream cant he =D
I do think the perverted Wonderland theme is getting rather worn out. The aforementioned Tim Burton film was based on the same principle (and apparently sucked, though I haven't seen it yet) and Disney has also released a game based on the movie... so although I liked the original, I'm not sure if this sequel is going to be inspired enough to do its predecessor justice. But I'll certainly keep my fingers crossed!
(By the way, little known fact: there was talk of creating a movie based on the game after its success, but that never got made, and probably now never will be, seeing as how Disney did it, and failed horribly.)
just as well that it was never made... sarah michelle geller was slated to play alice *shudders*
Incidentally, Nightmare Before Christmas wasn't actually directed by Tim Burton - it was Henry Selick, who went on to direct James and the Giant Peach along with Coraline. Also, neither films were animated in claymation, for none of it was animated in clay or plasticine; the proper term would be 'stop motion.'
YEEEEEEEEEAAAAAH NITPICKING
Rather Dashing confirmed for junkie, still hates his country
it has been confirmed that it will be released for PC, xbox360 and ps3
And for those who never played the original... do so! It's a great game which is still surprisingly playable today. It was built on the Quake 3 engine, so it still looks fairly good (even if you will need to edit an ini file to get a decent resolution), and the gameplay is wonderfully dark and twisted. Make sure you read the Casebook first, there's a great bit of backstory there that goes way beyond the introductory cutscene. Optional, but highly recommended.
The first one was nothing short of pure genius. Setting things after the two books & adding a potentially mentally crippling disaster made sure the grimness wasn't there just to be "edgy" or to "appeal to today's angsty youth".
It's also obvious that American did read & more importantly, understood the books, so everything fell into place perfectly.
And the music... dear Gawd - I'm not a NIN fan, but the work Trent did in that game is astoundingly brilliant. That music is easily 50% of that game.
The graphics still hold on quite well, surprisingly. Excellent work done there, as well.
One of the best games I've ever played... not likely to change anytime soon, either.
Let's see how this turns out.
Cheers!

Thanks for posting that - I didn't even know there was a casebook that came with the game
also @ ruby, if you have one of the newer copies of the game it's included digitally... if you have an older edition of the game, the entire casebook is included in one of the faq's on gamefaqs (not sure which one)
