Win7 x64, GeForce 9800GTX+ issue with ToMI

edited July 2010 in Game Support
Running Win7 x64 on Intel 58 mobo with i7 960 CPU and GeForce 9800GTX+. Whenever I start up any of the Tales of Monkey Island episodes, screen goes black and then the program eventually crashes with Windows saying it will not run.

I've updated to the latest nvidia drivers (258) and latest Direct X.

Dxdiag below:

Does Compatibility Mode set to Vista SP2 do anything for you?

Can you post the complete Dxdiag? A lot of information is missing.

Does your Windows username contain Non-ASCII Characters? If so, try creating another account with only "a-z".

You can also try installing the latest Nvidia driver.

Unfortunately, I'm having issues with installing the new Nvidia drivers, I've lost the control panel and now it keeps crashing...

My username does contain Japanese characters.

Unfortunately, I'm having issues with installing the new Nvidia drivers, I've lost the control panel and now it keeps crashing...

My username does contain Japanese characters.

Did you try completely uninstalling the previous driver and rebooting before installing the new one?

The Japanese characters could be the problem. There was a similar case here.

Does Compatibility Mode set to Vista SP2 do anything for you?

    No, still crashes.

I tried wiping out all drivers using Revo Uninstaller and Driver Sweeper and reinstalled from scratch but the installer failed on the Control Panel piece again.

That's strange. You could try that again with the Japanese Version of the driver.

Once your driver installation is finished, you should try creating a new user account with only a-z in it's name. That should get the game running.
Here are instructions on creating a user acount .You might want to google for japanese instructions though.

I've tried using the Guest account which only has a-z characters in it and the game still crashes.

I see. Keep trying with that account for the further tests, just to be sure.

I would try a clean boot next (see instructions below).

You can also try updating your Realtek HDA Driver.

There are also some DirectInput devices you could try to unplug/uninstall if everything else fails:
