Direct 3D trouble

edited August 2010 in Game Support
I'm trying to play Sam and Max seasons 1 and 2, but every time I try to launch an episode it gives me this message:
"Could not initialize Direct3D. Make sure you have current video drivers and close any applications that might be running."
So, I checked to see if my computer met the system requirements (it surpassed them), reinstalled DirectX and made sure all applications had been quit. The message I got was "Could not initialize Direct3D. Make sure you have current video drivers and close any applications that might be running."
Does anyone know haw to fix this? I'm desperate!

I did everything the support site told me to, but it still doesn't work!

What operating system do you have?

A dxdiag log might be useful.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Then zip the file and attach it to a reply in this Thread.

I'm using Windows Vista. Here's the "DxDiag" stuff.

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

Your drivers are indeed a bit old. Try installing the latest nvidia driver and Realtek HDA driver.

When I try to download them it tells me the files cannot be extracted.
Now that I think about it, that shouldn't be the problem. I can play SBCG4AP and The Devil's Playhouse just fine on this computer.

You get that error message with both drivers?
You should really try to get them installed, especially the graphics driver.

You can also try a clean boot:

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. Click on OK
    8. Click Restart.
    9. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

    Based on Will's post

The Clean Boot didn't work. :(
I'll try installing the drivers again.

I installed the drivers, tried a clean boot and it still doesn't work!
Does anyone have any ideas? I may just have to apply for a refund. :(

I only have random ideas left you could try...
Install the Vista service packs and other updates. Also run the DirectX updater.

If you want a refund you can email support. They might also have other ideas in order to get the game running.

Okay, I'm downloading the Service Packs. Cross your fingers! The DirectX updater said I already had a newer version of DirectX.

In what way? Can you get it running again?

I just got it running again. I still need to install the service packs though. And I'm on vacation right now.

If the service packs don't work, I may have to ask Telltale for A)other solutions B)a refund or peferably C)The Steam Versions

If you cannot get the games to work, I'm sure Telltale will have no problem with giving you a refund (or store credit if the order is over 60 days old).
I'm pretty sure, however, that they won't be able to trade for the Steam versions and that you will have to purchase those on your own.

I've gotten this error for every S&M S03 game, and what I do is:
    1. Find the exe file, typically C:\Program Files\Telltale Games\Sam and Max - The Devil's Playhouse\Beyond the Alley of the Dolls\SamMax304.exe
    2. Right click, open properties
    3. Under Compatibility, check Disable desktop composition
    4. Profit

As a side note, if you set the game to play in windowed mode, you can turn desktop composition back on, and it'll still work. At least it does here.

I finally got the games to work by using the disc versions! :D Thanks to everyone who tried to help!
