Websites that Didn't Need the Change

edited April 2011 in General Chat
So, recently one of my favorite game sites, Kongregate, has been accquired by GameStop, and everyone is worrying about changes. I myself are not worrying, but I did get a good topic. What websites do you think should never have changed to what they are now?

One of mine is Candystand.com. Shortly after Wrigley was bought by MARS, the site got changed. Go figure. It's completely horrible now, before it had quality original content but now it takes crap from all other game sites, including RuneScape, which doesn't even deserve to be there. They also added a huge community thing, and prizes, but that seems to make the site even worse, and I can't even stand to play a game there ever again.

YOUTUBE they make loads of unnecessary changes and the page layouts get worse and worse and when you get used to something they change it

The only one I can think of is Wonka.com. I used to visit that site a lot when I was younger, and it had over 50 games, all of which you could download. Now, it's just an "info" site.

I agree with you 110%. The site seems to have appealed more to adults and teens for some reason, same with Cheetos. Cheetos had a lot more games before, not links to youtube and a "game" where you give cheetos to a girl and watch her reaction.

Telltalegames.com. Those auto-playing videos are a major annoyance and gigantic orange buttons are an eyesore.

I disagree with all the youtube hate. I much prefer the new layout and I've liked pretty much every improvement Google have made since they acquired it.

Everyone is annoyed that they got rid of the star system, but I can't figure out why... the new system is a lot more informative. Youtube released a graph to justify that particular change which showed that that vast majority of users (probably 90% or more) never gave 2, 3 or 4 star ratings. The only ratings anyone every gave were 1 star and 5 star ones. Isn't that the same as "like" or "dislike"?

Our local movie theatres used to have really great, well-designed sites until they were bought out by Marcus Theatres. Now everything just directs to their crappy website.

Is there a reason why you're on these forums?

Also, Google's new image search is awful. It's laggy and buggy and can never load anything beyond the first page of images.

It would be, if there was an option to see "% liked". The 5-star system offered an average rating, that the like system, as it stands, doesn't.
Not that i hate the new system, i just wish you could see the %.

I don't however like, the new grey bar that appears at the bottom of the screen when watching subscribed videos, that defaults to "autoplay next in subscriptions" with every video I load up.

If the forums had autoplaying videos and giant orange buttons, then I wouldn't be here. As it is, I make a point to avoid the main page by having my bookmark set to the forums and the blog rather than the main page that I never go to anymore because it yells at me whenever I go there.

I also hate how they've changed the little banner that a Youtube Partner would have, and the AutoPlay and quickplay stuff is useless.

You can see how many people have liked and disliked though, Friar, and I COMPLETELY agree with you on the grey bar. It makes Youtube look like one of those sites where there's always something following your screen.

I have to agree with what some people are saying about the root page of www.telltalegames.com. The autoplaying videos really slow down my computer, they can be loud, and it reeks of inefficiency. I do like the forums, though.

Also, one of the few things that I dislike about the forums is that it seems I have to go to a different part of the website to log out. As I make sure I log out whenever I am not on so as to prevent my family members from posting anything bad if they are angry at me, this can get annoying.

I have, actually. In a much older thread. I believe it was the thread against selling used games.
  • edited July 2010
I agree with Wonka, Google Images, and Telltale. Wonka used to be amazing, and I think I still have the old games on my old computer's old hard drive (it was a LONG time ago). Image search sucks hard now. And I can't remember what Telltale's front page used to look like anymore, but the autoplaying videos are not an improvement over whatever it was.

Also, how has this thread gotten to page 2 with nobody mentioning deviantArt?

Dude, they took away full screen auto play videos! How can I watch my Jesus camp on a small little box?

Don't forget the elegant (bwahahaha!) orange buttons jumping at your face to demand you buy stuff.

Huh, I heavily prefer the new Google Image Search. Why is the older version better?

Huh, I heavily prefer the new Google Image Search. Why is the older version better?

because it didn't load every result at the same time, thus causing major lag. plus, each thing was in it's own space, not everywhere around the joint.
  • edited July 2010
Huh. I had browser extensions that made every result appear at the same time. Also, what do you mean "it's own space"? The page inefficiently used space and had a lot of dead, unused area?

people with slow-ish internet get random images loading, usually not the ones you want, some 3 pages down before the top ones load.
each image was in its own box, with title, home url, and size. now, its all whacked together into a hideous behemoth. and whenever you mouse over it, the enlargement is unnessecary and disorienting.

You can see the amount of people who like a certain video. In fact, it's much easier to see the amount of people who like a video now, as it displays in a bar chart and gives you the exact figures. Much less ambiguous than a 5 star rating.
I agree with you about the new grey bar, though. I didn't know what you were talking about at first, I had to check. Hopefully, since it's so new, it's in a beta stage or something.

Also I agree with RD about google's new image search. I have an extension for chrome that enlarges facebook pictures whenever I mouse over them, so I'm used to mousing over an image to see a bigger version of it. If so many people dislike that, though, then I guess there should be an option to disable it.

A lot of people are just conservative about things for no reason. It can be annoying at first to see that something you're used to has changed, but you shouldn't be against improvements.

    Good point.
Then again, I had already deleted my account and moved on. All those ads on my slow connection mean the page timed out 4 out of 5 times anyway.

You can fix that with Firefox's Adblock Plus extension. NoScript helps too.

On the topic of the new Youtube layout, I much prefer it. I think it's great; what some would consider 'unnecessary changes' are what I would call 'smart improvements'. I like the idea of the highest rated comments staying at the top of the page, now people won't think of getting the 'first comment!' as an achievement, rather they'll think of the highest rated comment being an achievement - which is actually something worth getting. I also like the fact that the uploader comments stay at the top of the page, because most uploader comments are replies to questions, and there will probably be multiple people who have the same questions, and this new layout prevents the uploader from having to constantly answer the same questions over-and-over.

Agreed. As someone who has the highest rated comment on a few videos, it's actually pretty rewarding. Not only that, but it gives you a good idea of the general consensus on the video.

The one thing I don't like, though, is not being able to see the comments that people are replying to. Clicking "@username"; should take you to the specific comment in question rather than a list of that user's recent comments.

I don't like the new playlist manager bar at the bottom though on Youtube. It obstructs the page. Mind you I've never liked the playlist system, it automatically moving you onto the next part without asking.

you can turn the aulto play off and sort of hide the bar a bit by collapsing it

Funny i dont get the bar on all of the videos. Must be just playlists.

Also i am fine with the new telltale layout i just dont like the fact that i cant see the latest blog post anymore. I always would just come to the website check the blog and leave if i didnt have time to check the forums out.
Why did telltale remove that little feature.
