If ToMI 2 is to be released...

edited September 2010 in Tales of Monkey Island
...I hope it may be a musical game. I mean, you can still explore the islands and solve puzzles without singing, but some of the puzzles will be musical and rhythm-based, and some will be like "A Pirate I Was Meant to Be" in The Curse of Monkey Island; and most cutscenes and the storyline will be singing-based a la "Once More, With Feeling" from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, as shown here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Once_More,_with_Feeling_(Buffy_the_Vampire_Slayer)

Also, I just hope the LucasArts creators bring back the "Plank of Love" song for the ending of ToMI Season 2. That song was never brought to fruition in CoMI due to time constraints even though the lyrics were written, so they've got to bring the melody back for this one. And I just hope Dominic Armato (Guybrush) and Alexandra Boyd (Elaine) may sing as it should have been a long time ago. Maybe Neil Patrick Harris and others may join them in other songs as well. Here's the link for "Plank of Love": http://miwiki.net/Plank_of_Love

No offense, but this is just my personal opinion, and this is a horrible idea. If they raped Monkey Island like this, I would join the legions of former MI Fans who have broken rank due to personal disagreement with latter games. I'd have no choice. Musicals are fine, in the right context. Monkey Island, the right context for a musical, is not. Musical scenes, fine. An entire "musical" game, no. Just no.

    What monkey said.

Guys, he said that he just wanted the next Monkey Island game to have more musical numbers, that's all. Similar to the bone song or "A pirate I was meant to be". He never said he wanted the whole game to be a musical affair.

    And I quote (boldface mine)...

"...but some of the puzzles will be musical and rhythm-based, and some will be like "A Pirate I Was Meant to Be" in The Curse of Monkey Island; and most cutscenes and the storyline will be singing-based"

A singing-based storyline, and most cut scenes involving singing, with many of the puzzles being musical and rhythm-based ... sounds like MONKEY ISLAND: THE MUSICAL to me! Not a value judgment, you understand. :) But it sure sounds like he's looking for a little more than "the bone song" or "A Pirate I Was Meant To Be!"

Ah, ok. I'm never good at understanding what people mean:p Thanks for letting me know.

I think that would be AWESOME!

But I'm also the only one, most likely.

Instead, why not just have one or two great musical numbers? There need to be more musical numbers in videogames...

No, I find musical numbers generally irritating. I'd prefer there to be NO musical numbers in Monkey Island (or Sam & Max either). 'A Pirate I was Meant to Be' was good as a one-off, but no more, I say. And even in animated movies, the majority of the musical numbers just make me cringe and look away from the screen, so I'd hate for Monkey Island's usually awesome cutscenes to turn into something like that (what we see in films). I'm sorry, but I personally hate this concept, almost as much as the 'Monkey Island is set in the mind of a little boy' theory. The whole musical idea would just completely destroy the essence and appeal of Monkey Island for me. Like Monkey_05_06 said, it would rape Monkey Island.

An adventure game with tons of musical cut scenes and puzzles doesn't sound like a bad idea, but I'd prefer it to be its own original game rather than a MI game. MI is already a well-established series that only uses music once in a while. Why change it now? The idea of a "musical adventure game" is already high-concept enough and deserves its own game without tacking it onto an existing series.

I feel you guys are talking about the episodic Tales of Monkey Island 2 not wanting to be a musical. I understand. Maybe some of the episodes and their cutscenes may be music-based like someone controlling people's emotions into music, but what about "Plank of Love"? That song never made it to CoMI due to time constraints, as I said before. Maybe you don't want to have the LucasArts or Telltale guys bring back the song? :(

Oh, and I'm a woman, BTW.

I have a couple of questions:

    1) Why would Neil Patrick Harris be involved in a future game? Surely his only connection with Monkey Island is that fans would like him to star as Guybrush in a movie.
    2) Why would anybody want "Plank of Love" recorded?! It's so incredibly bad! Even the official strategy guide makes clear that it was considered godawful!

Wasn't a musical number planned for TOMI? Something called "Guybrush and Elaine Turkey Extravaganza" or something like that... Or that was just a joke? I don't remember...

But there was definetly a musical number planned for Chapter 4 I believe which got cut out because it didn't fit with the tone of the rest of the chapter.

#2. I thought the song never made it due to the team running out of time in CoMI? And since when did the official strategy guide for CoMI prove that "Plank of Love" was bad?

    1) I wonderd this too. Personally I don't think NPH fits Guybrush's image. He's nearly 40 years old and openly gay.

Also, I wouldn't mind a little bit of songs included in MI like they did in CMI, but please don't make it a musical game.

I'm confused by this statement. What does that have to do with him playing Guybrush? I certainly think he doesn't really fit the role, and he may well be too old, but he's an actor. He can act. Therefore, his sexual orientation is entirely irrelevant as long as he can act like his sexual orientation is the same as whatever character he is playing.

Of course, I'm confused about why Neil Patrick Harris was even brought up. Did I miss something? Perhaps a post that mentioned Neil Patrick Harris was edited before I had a chance to read this thread?

You're right. NPH being gay is nothing to do with his acting ability. I just meant that Guybrush isn't gay, and certainly didn't mean that Neil Patrick Harris can't act a straight guy because he's gay. I'm sorry if anybody is offended by my comment.

Well, Neil Patrick Harris is to play some new villain that controls people's emotions in music, like Sweet did in "Once More, with Feeling".

I imagne that any Monkey Island movie would have to stay animated, and stick with the voice actors we already know and love. Live action just doesn't seem to suit it in my opinion. It would also have to be handled very carefully, or go through a LOT of re-writing, as comedies that make lots of cultural references tend to get poo-poohed by the critics.

If it ever were developed into something beyond a game, it'd probably do better as a TV series. Now that Lucasfilm's getting into cartoons, it might be a possibility if they ever decide to do something non-Star-Wars.

I declare this thread officially derailed.

Hm, I'd like a surprise song sung by Guybrush and Elaine at the end of the next game (yeah, something like the "Plank of Love" but other than that, I don't think it's necessary to add musical puzzles to Monkey Island whatsoever.
