I just read on wiki

Purcell considers Max to be representative of pure ,the uncoordinated instinctual trends of the human psyche.

thats what the narrator/super ego though about max

    That bit about Max was always canon. The thing I would never imagine was the fact he actually had an Ego and Super Ego, considering he is pure Id.

    They said as much in the very first season.

    And on my copy of Surfin' the Highway, it says "Sam is the verbose and hell-bent dog in a suit, while Max, the three-foot-rabbity thing, is pure, unleashed id".
