Disc Vs. Download install

edited September 2010 in General Chat
So let's say I feel like revisiting Tales of Monkey Island. I have 2 options now. I can either redownload my games from my account, or I can use my nifty collector's DVD to install it.

Is there a benefit to either one? Will the DVD install take up less space? Will the download install provide more up-to-date and stable versions of the game? Or do I end up with the same result no matter which way I go? (In which case, advantage: DVD due to quick install time)

Well, the DVD version doesn't have DRM in it at all, so that's nice.

Yes, the DRM thing is nice. Also, the disc versions don't run the launcher thing before and after the game. You also get Earl Boen in Narwhal. As for getting a more stable version by downloading, no way. The only way Telltale will ever bother updating their downloads is if one of their games has an Earth-shatteringly game-breaking bug. That's why the Earl Boen Narwhal isn't available for download.

    So yeah, DVD for sure.

    Use the DVD.

-No DRM(you don't even need the disc in the drive to play, there is no disc check)
-It has the Earl Boen voice performance in Episode 1
    -No download time
-You get a launcher for the whole season.

So yeah. Install from the disc, copy the bonus folder onto your computer, eject disc, put it in the box, and set the box on your shelf and never touch it again, or at least don't touch it until you need to install again.

Some people (such as myself) don't see the launcher as a good thing and prefer to use shortcuts, so I'd like to add that the launcher is totally optional. I personally think it's a cool feature, but I like my little grouping of Telltale/LucasArts shortcuts on my desktop, so I'm happier not bothering with it.

I have a huge grouping, because I've got shortcuts for everything Telltale has released so far. :( I'd really like some kind of Telltale launcher that I can dock in the corner of my screen and use it to launch the games so I can free up some of my desktop (And no, Steam won't work for me, nor will the start menu, nor the toolbars that you can make on the Windows Taskbar).

If you have a Dell, you can download the Dell Dock. Someone linked to it in the desktop screenshots thread (I'll see if I can find the link), and I tried it out and really like it. I still like all the shortcuts in the corner of my desktop, so my main use for the dock is as a place to keep most of the LucasArts adventure game shortcuts, since I don't really have room for all those on top of all my Telltale icons.

A RocketDock or ObjectDock or the Windows 7 Dock can work very well for these purposes too.

Create a folder. Put all the icons in the folder. Open the folder when you want to start a game.

    Desktop cleaned up!

    ;)

Having the disc in the drive really irks me. prolly cos I end up with a pile of discs on top of my tower cos i'm too lazy top put em back when I take them out

I have created a taskbar on my super bar for my games

...which would be valid, if you actually needed the disc in the drive during anything other than install.
