Favourite Cover Art

edited October 2010 in General Chat
Here's a thread for us all to share some of our personal favourite art that has graced the cover of games, books, albums, movies etc. over the years.

I don't know about you guys, but I much prefer physical releases of media, as opposed to digital distribution. And one of the main reasons for that is due the art that is on the cover of those products. I sometimes spend minutes on end looking at the cover of some of my games and CD's, because some of the artwork and imagery just looks amazing, and it really is something that should be appreciated.

So, I decided to post a thread where we can celebrate and share some of it.

By the way, please try to post smaller, or medium-sized images, as opposed to really large ones. Just provide a link to larger images if you wish to show them.

Anyway, here's one of my personal favourite album covers:

Region 2 generally has the better Cover Art in my experiences. Take for example Star Trek TNG, or the 2005(ish) prints of the Fleming Bond Novels by Penguin. Region 1 has a train and a woman modeling, while 2 has a CGI Sean Connery in front of an explosion.

Yes, that was always going to be posted; it's such a brilliant piece of artwork - MI-related or not.

It's only a matter of time, though, that someone posts the Special Edition version as a joke :).

Most of Steve Purcell's stuff. This sounds lame, but I love the stuff Jake Rodkin (Jake on these forums) has done, for pretty much anything.

I also love anything that thinks outside of the box. I'm really into making birthday cards and mock book covers and such, but I never have the time. I have this big idea for an awesome Secret of Monkey Island one, and it's interactive, but I need the time.

    Anyways, other favorites:

I like this for the illustration:

Yes, 'Vapor Trails' has a very cool cover! And Alestorm always have great cover art (which I personally think it better than their music) - it's very Monkey Island-y.

Rush is awesome. Vapor Trails a great album on top of having an awesome cover. I'm generally very picky about Rush's music, and prog rock in general (there's a tendency to self-indulgence that I don't particularly care for) but it was a very solid album.

Yes is another prog rock band that I love their album covers. Particularly Fragile.

There is a certain LeChuckness to the pirates on their albums isn't there?

I find the cover Captain Morgan's Revenge much more epic than the cover of Black Sails at Midnight. That one just looked really busy to me. Their music is....so-so IMHO. Some of it, like "No Quarter" or "Of Treasure", I enjoy, but most of the time the vocals are a little harsh for my tastes.

I find those covers to be very dull in comparison. Not that they're bad, they're just not very appealing to me comparatively. I think it's all the grays. Fragile isn't very busy as an album cover, but the colors are vibrant, which I've always sort of associated to the album (especially songs like "South Side of The Sky" and "Heart of the Sunrise"). I see it and immediately just hear the opening guitar riffs to "Roundabout".

I'm actually yet to buy 'Vapor Trails', but I have heard several tracks from it and have been impressed. What's your opinion of 'Snakes & Arrows'? It's one of my personal favourite albums. It also has some really great imagery inside the album booklet (which really went well with the music).

Yeah, I know what you mean. I usually just overlook that, though. For me, part of listening to progressive rock is focusing on the elements you like, and turning a deaf ear to the elements that you don't like. Because, it's so experimental at times, that there's just bound to be parts of the music that you dislike. Perhaps experimentation can come across as self indulgence... or perhaps it's just self indulgence :).

Yes, absolutely. It's very cool. It's could almost have been a cover for 'LeChuck's Revenge'.

Yes, that's exactly what turns me off them a little. Yes, the music is brilliant at times (from what I've heard), but once the vocals come in, I find it hard to listen to anymore. I sort of wish they'd produce instrumental versions of their albums, because I'd probably buy them if they were to do that.

Snakes & Arrows is a different sound for Rush. It's a little more conventional rock in terms of the instrument sounds, but I really enjoyed it. "Ghost of a Chance" in particular sticks out in my head as just really fantastic song that mixed everything I love about Rush with a very different, yet very enjoyable, sound.

Its definitely a big step up from Feedback which was not bad, but just not up to par with Vapor Trails.

In terms of the art, I really liked it, even the live album cover. It's interesting without being really busy, which is really what I think you want with an album cover. Something to complement, rather than overpower, the music.

I can do that most of the time, but there are certain phases of Prog rock bands that I really just find a bit unlistenable. For example, Yes sort of loses me after Fragile until about 90125. There are still a few songs I like, but it just feels like there are so many long concept songs that aren't doing anything that interesting.

Conversely something a little self-indulgent can be really awesome, like Neil Peart's drum solo in "Der Trommler".

It could have definitely. Feels a little dark for the more stylized nature of the series now, but it still works in a way.

Same and one of the big killers for me is many times the vocals don't really line up with what's playing. Sometimes that works, but only if the vocalist is really, really good, and that's not the case here.

I have Captain Morgan's Revenge and Black Sails At Midnight because a friend keeps giving me them to upload, but I really only take about 4 or 5 songs off the albums in total.
