That sounds more metally yeah... and I prefer it over most Within Temptation's music. Such a shame they went 'softer'...

@ VeronicanPlay; who knows these days anymore when bands combine 3 genres on the same CD.
Personally I would agree with you on Lordi though.

I used to like Within Temptation, but it was only the songs with hard tones the rest was just too soft for my liking. What Have You Done is an all time favourite of mine. :)

I'm the opposite. I love the hard songs on Enter, but Sharon's voice is much more suited to the soft rock they do now, and they're all the better for it.

That said, I do miss Robert's growls.

    You've got excellent taste ;).

No problem, just a hard time classifying Nickelback as metal. Especially once I found a 70 year old man listening to it once on the train :p.

Haha! I want to meet this man :D.

My favorite genre in general is wtfmusic, metal that could fit in that description is Fantômas, naked city, Earth, Melvins, SunnO))), Orthrelm however the genre is much more broad than that.

    see wtfmusic.org

Wtfmusic? Ha ha ha, this was a new name for a genre to me. I think Melvins and Earth are great. I wouldn't exactly call SunnO))) good, interesting is probably a better word. :) I thought they played Drone though. I really must check out the other bands you mention. Do you listen to any Sludge Metal (basicly a combination of Doom Metal and Stoner Rock) like Neurosis or Isis?

Yes, also I listen to a lot of Doom and Stoner. Every year I go to the roadburn festival that basically sums up a lot of my taste in 'metal'.

From Kyuss to Eyehategod and from Comus to Rammeses via ufomammut and electric wizard back to Bohren und der club of gore.

I do agree that sunnO))) is the least interesting of the bunch though.

I dont know why people would limit themselves in music listening I listen to basically every style of music that has some adventurous attitude towards music.

    Yup.

It's amusing if people are surprised I listen to metal *and* electronics music since apparently they are excluded from each other or something equally silly...

This! I made the mistake of closing myself off to unfamiliar genres in the past. As a side effect, my tastes are constantly fluctuating wildly as I uncover new music. I have my standbys, of course, but I keep discovering and getting blown away by styles I never knew existed.

My current infatuation is with an experimental electronica band called Crystal Castles. A few years ago, I wouldn't have even bothered with an electronica band, but curiosity paid off.

Moral of the story: There is an endless supply of good music out there, and if you surround yourself with a single set of genres, you'll never hear 99% of it.

Aside from Country (though on occasion I will listen to a little) I generally listen to every genre at some point. Electronica and Rock are probably the two I listen to most frequently, but my iTunes playlist is a mishmash of artists and genres.

The only two things I flat out refuse to listen to, if only because my dad has shoved it down my throat so often, are the Beach Boys and Dwight Yoakam.

I know, right! Hats-off to whoever put in the time and effort to make it. The only problem is that it's going to have to be constantly expanded, with this genre continuing to grow at the rate it has.

    ...Metal Earth?

    Oh, that's bad. :p

I'd call it Middengard, it always sounded like a rock band name anyway, hell half of the names of things in Old Norse sound like they're going to play guitar solos at you.

Don't hate me for this, but I never knew exactly why it's called 'Metal'.

Is it because they use metal strings?

Why is country called country, why is pop called popular, pretty sure it ain't the most popular music type after all. Jazz? Hip Hop? Rap?

I can explain the Jazz one. Jazz or 'Jass' was a West Coast slang term for music coming out of Chicago in 1915-1916ish. It eventually became applied to the music that branched off that Chicago movement and the Dixeland music of the time until it's just become the term for the genre at large.

Hey guys I need help identifying my favorite sub-genre of metal. What kind of metal would this be considered? I'm not entirely sure.

It's hard not to headbang along. I would call it eggnog-dense metal.

    *lol*

I never was into Metal, it all seemed so pathetic, although technically there are some great metal guitar players.

Thanks a lot for this. Now, for the next week, whenever I'm trying to study for finals I'll be thinking "Santa Claaause! In a helicoptaaaaa!"

    The Map of Metal

Ha ha ha, that was awesome. The fact that it's more or less an impossible mission to cover all metal genres is shown pretty clear here since occasionally the same band is listed as an important example in more then one genre, he he he. :) It's also funny how the meaning of some labels change over time.
