Sam and Max won't launch

edited December 2010 in Game Support
I played the previous two seasons on gametap with no problems whatsoever. I purchased and downloaded straight from the Telltale Games website. My system meets the requirements but when I start the game I receive this message: Telltale Games has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

My drivers are all up to date. My system is clean. Upon trolling the internet for solutions I found that it may have something to do with my ancient Intel express 945GV chipset.

I tried to download swiftshader and 3d analyzer as a work around. Can anyone help me? Am I looking in the wrong area? Any advice would be welcome.

Please post a dxdiag log. That should make things clearer.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Then zip the file and attach it to a reply in this Thread.

I hope someone figures this out. I downloaded the program to my boyfriend's computer and it was playable there. I really want to play it on my own since I don't know how often he will let me annex his system for my own needs.

My system meets the requirements but when I start the game I receive this message: Telltale Games has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for this inconvenience.

Can you copy the details from the error message?

I would try a clean boot as a first measure (see below) to see if the game works then.
    Description: Logitech USB Headset

You could also try disconnecting the USB headset and all other non-essential USB devices.

    Booting clean in Windows XP:
    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Process SYSTEM.INI file
    4. Uncheck Process WIN.INI file
    5. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    6. Click on the Services tab
    7. At the bottom, check Hide All Microsoft Services
    8. Uncheck all boxes in the window or click the button labeled Disable All
    6. Click OK
    7. Click Restart
    8. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click OK
    4. Click YES, when asked to restart your computer

    Based on Will's post

Same response after following both suggestions separately and together. Has anyone had this problem and been able to solve it?

Did you run the DirectX updater?

What happens when you disable all sound devices in the device manager before starting the game?

My best guess is that it's a graphics card issue though.

I ran the direct x updater on every install. I did several uninstalls and reinstalls while trying to fix problems. I also just went to the windows site and updated directly from that as well as my net runtime environment just in case. I also only disabled the audio codecs for my sigmatel card. I don't have much choice with getting new drivers there since the company got purchased by someone else and they are no longer putting out anything new for my internal audio.

I get the same message after disabling sound devices and starting game.

I fear i am running out of ideas. If you have someone who has a left over graphics card lying around, with a chip less than 5 years old, i would give that a try.

I feared it would be a no go. Thanks for your help. The only solution is to upgrade.
