Sentai discussion? I'm so all over this like white on rice. I seriously turned off Kamen Rider Decade the minute I saw this post, that's how excited I was to find it.

Has anyone had a chance to catch the new series, Power Ranger Samurai? I haven't really liked a PR series (I like most of the original sentai shows just fine) since Power Rangers Time Force and I really liked Samurai Sentai Shinkenger that I find myself a little leery of diving headfirst in.

(Yes, I am a huge sentai nerd why do you ask?)

I don't think it's started yet, I haven't liked a PR series sind Dyno Thunder, and I haven't liked an episode since Once a ranger (Liked because of old rangers)

I'm excited for Samurai tell the truth.

I started watching it again shortly before I found out about Linkara's History of Power Rangers series. Right now I'm somewhere in the middle of MMPR2 and I'm in the middle of a super long break from it. I've got all the seasons lined up through Dino Thunder, but I'm finding S.P.D. to be unobtainable as a torrent, since that's when Disney started releasing the series to DVD.

I wouldn't know, I only watched through in Space as a kid. Lost Galaxy killed my interest the first time around because it dropped the continuing storyline thing.

Linkara's History of Power Rangers series.

That series is really great. I'm not a Power Rangers fan, but I still found it fascinating. (Link for those who haven't heard of it.) I think I was at just the wrong age to never really care much about Power Rangers. I knew of it, but didn't watch it or know anything about it's popularity. Watching Linkara's coverage (and seeing the recordings of the panels at Power Morphicon) was some nice insight into what made the Power Rangers such a cultural landmark.

I am too, despite my leeryness. Samurai Sentai Skinkenger is up there with Kamen Rider Black and Mirai Sentai Timeranger as just a really well done sentai show with good characterization and plot. Of the last two Kamen Rider Black got a weak adaptation (Seriously, never watch Masked Rider if you've ever seen Kamen Rider Black, it'll make you cry a bit), but Mirai Sentai Timeranger got a fantastic adaptation, the likes of which I hadn't seen since Denji Sentai Megaranger(Power Rangers in Space) whose american version was significantly better.

Lost Galaxy is pretty weak, as is Wild Force, but they do get better, and between those two are Lightspeed Rescueand Time Force, both of which are very solid and enjoyable.

Hm, maybe I'm just a bit slow this morning, but what war are you talking about?

The only good Power Rangers in my opinion are:

    - The original
    - In Space
    - Time Force

I gave up watching a few years ago.

Even stranger is that one episode of MMPR Season 1, "Second Chance", had one-time child actor (now death row inmate) Skylar Deleon.

I liked all PR shows up until SPD, which I barely got to watch but still liked. I missed all of Mystic Force, Overdrive, and Jungle Fury, but apparently I didn't miss much. RPM however, was quite awesome what I got to watch every now and then, it's amazing how they turned a not serious at all Sentai show into probably THE darkest and most serious of the seasons (I mean, wasn't part of the premise of the show that most of humanity is already dead?).

I hope Samurai delivers. I watch my own country's dub of the shows though, so my experience is probably different to yours.

Kinda yet not totally off-topic: I loved Masked Rider as a child. Now I know that it's supposed to be an abomination but let me have my childhood memories >__>

I agree with that sentiment wholeheartedly.

Personally, I never got the 'purist' movement among Sentai fans. I mean, guys, we're watching a show where people in costumes use wire-fu and goofy special effects to beat up people in Kaiju costumes. This isn't Lawrence of Arabia here. Don't get me wrong I love the goofiness of the whole thing, I've been in love with sentai and kaiju stuff since I was 4 and that's never going to stop, but the way some people get defensive about it. I find flaws in both, but what it comes down to for me is 'did I enjoy it'? If yes, then it's a good sentai show, American localization or not.

I judge you not for having enjoyed Masked Rider as a kid, I'm just saying that going and watching Kamen Rider Black as a teen/adult and THEN going back to it? That...hurts a little. Seriously though if you did like Masked Rider or just like sentai in general, any of the Kamen Rider series' are a must see. We owe the existence of PR to this show and the man who created it (one of my favorite writers ever) Shotaro Ishinomori.

I totally would if I wasn't wasting my time already on other non productive things which leaves me without time for it. Same reason I tend to prefer reading a manga over watching an anime honestly =P

I watch a few episodes when I was much younger. May this be viewed free of implications :D
