In my family the pet's last name is the family name. Pets also have middle names. Patricia Joyce S., Dolly Gracie S., Wilbur Fenton S. ... That's so Mom had something to shout whenever the pet got into serious trouble. You know, like how when as a kid you did something really bad your mom would use three names.
In any case, when I saw the thread title, the first thing I thought was also Sam Max and Max Sam.

Sam Mcgruff! He hates being called mcgruff which is why it's a good surname
I can't think of one for Max
It doesn't have to be complicated, guys.
For their Forbearers.
Max Destroyer-of-worlds
Samuel Hill and Maxwell Smith.
Sam Max and Max Sam?
Maybe Max's middle and last names are "Little" and "Buddy"?
But if I had to give them last names, I'd take the laziest route possible and say they're Sam Ewell and Max Imilian.
Maybe that's the reason the sometimes mistakenly call each other vice-versa!
Oh god this thread is getting hilarious
They could be called Sultry Sam and Mad Max(sorry it's the best I could think of).
That's... not right, I don't think.
My dog sorta does...
Sam Shamus and Max Imum. Oh shoot me NAO.

Samuel Oliver Leon and Maxwell Isaac Mum.
Damn. I was coming here to see if Sam had a last name. In my mind I always called him "Sam Spade" -- it sounds very 1930's Detective-ish.
