Myst version

edited February 2011 in General Chat
Hey all,
I've gotten an interest in the game Myst, but I've seen at least 4 versions for sale. So, simply put, which version is worth finding/ buying? Ive seen the original, RealMyst, masterpiece edition, and the DS port. There may be others, but these are the ones i'm familiar with.

If you buy either the Masterpiece Edition (which is basically the original game with some updates) or Real Myst (which is the game redone with 3D level design) from gog.com they should work just fine on a modern computer. Masterpiece is the probably the better option if you want the "authentic" experience, but Real Myst isn't bad. They are only $5.99 each at gog.com.

If you have an iPhone or iPod touch, there's a version of Myst on there that was ported by Cyan and it's pretty much perfect.

Otherwise yeah, pick up either Masterpiece or realMyst from GoG.com, depending on whether you want the original experience, or to explore in more immersive realtime 3D. There are pros and cons to both so it's tough for me to make a recommendation, but I gravitate towards realMyst personally. There's a bit more content there and it's always cool to just look around.

Does the Masterpiece edition have the additional world that was added to RealMyst?

Nope. Neither does the iPhone version.

The PSP and DS versions have the Rime age shoehorned in, but otherwise it's exclusive to realMyst

I'll second that, the iphone version is fantastic. Just stay clear of the DS port. For pc I'd say get the masterpiece edition if your playing for the first time

I never had a problem with the DS port. I've heard some people say that some messages are impossible to read and that the soundtrack was completely different but I played through the entire game and didn't notice any differences. I also really like the memo pad implementation on the DS port where you can keep notes right in the game. Excellent. I was hoping for a Riven port as the company that made Myst DS was talking about it. I guess that's not happening...

I love RealMyst, as well. I remember when that first came out and I played the demo for hours. It was just such a fantastic atmosphere. I was just wandering around enjoying the views.

The additional world isn't really worth it though. If you can get Myst Masterpiece to run this might be a good option BUT I would still prefer realMyst for one reason: The music. The music and sounds are not perfect in Myst Masterpiece. RealMyst uses mp3s from the Soundtrack CD which you can even extract with the right tool.

That bundle is a great choice! Especially since you will also get Riven which is a much better (and harder) game.

Myst is one of those games I'd REALLY love to enjoy, but it's way to cryptic for me
  • edited February 2011
I think it's too sterile and empty.

I don't like these first person adventure games a lot. I want to point&click and enjoy some aquarium effect.

They are quite empty, but they are deep. Myst is child's play compared to Riven, though. It really is quite a few steps up in terms of challenge. Myst is fairly easy. Once you've mastered Myst be prepared for the next level (literally and metaphorically). The only thing I missed in Riven was all the different ages you could visit. Riven takes place in one age and one age only. You do visit another age (I believe) but it isn't for very long. But if you have patience, like to look and examine EVERYTHING, and like to read a lot Riven will be a grand escape from real life into a fascinating world to explore and solve its secrets. If not, it'll be pretty bland, boring, have very cryptic puzzles, and seem to move nowhere.

I guess i tried for a couple of times to like the game but i never could get warm with it (i have no idea if this phrase makes sense in english :O). I didn't find the story interesting, the renderings were mostly sterile and it was this empty world filled up with artificial puzzles.

I was missing someone to talk to and dunno i felt lonesome, trapped in not this fancy renderings full of noise.

And i remember after Myst there came a couple of awful me too render adventures. With the poor quality of CD-ROM drives which only tried to get faster those days chances were high getting some read-errors on CD3 or so. Obviously i should have known better but due to the setting i bought an Atlantis-First-Person-adventure which of course was awful and guess what i had problems with one of the CDs as well.

Well, anything from The Adventure Company is going to be awful. Not really in the same vein as Myst at all. They completely miss the mark.

Riven takes place in one age and one age only.

Uhm no? It's 95% of the time in one age but there is another. But yeah. Myst had more ages.

Did you read my entire post? I said exactly that. In fact it was the very next sentence of what you quoted.
