Possible In-Joke in SoMI?

So surely we all remember the mushrooms that Guybrush stumbled across in Hell when he first entered the Giant Monkey Head in the Secret of Monkey Island. I was just watching the famous 1902 French silent film "A Trip to the Moon." There is a scene in the film in which the astronomers enter a cave on the moon, and like Hell in SoMI, it's filled with giant mushrooms. Does anyone else think/know if the mushrooms in hell were a nod to that scene from the film?

    Form a review that Ron Gilbert did on Secret of Monkey Island (mainly noting good and bad ideas for future games) he said that both he and another one in the team (I think it was Tim Schaefer) hate mushrooms, and that's why they put it in the game.
