Shadows in "back to the future"

edited July 2011 in Game Support
This applies to episodes 1, 2 and 3.
If shadows are maxed out (2 bars), game will crash. If set to only 1 bar, game will run but shadows look like crap (pixelated and distorted) most of the time, specially on characters.

What's up with that? Currently playing on a ATI Radeon x1950pro (SM 3.0 support). I know it's old but so far I have been able to play games like Dead Space 2, Batman: Arkham Asylum, etc, with everything maxed out. You get the idea.

Any kind developer out there who can possibly know what is going on with this issue?

Also, anyone care to share a screenshot of how shadows maxed out (2 bars) look on character models?

So far I've opted to play with shadows set to 0 bars, because yes they look that distracting and ruin the experience. But unfortunately that also means characters won't cast any shadow on the ground, which look kind of flat.

Thanks in advance.

could be a graphic driver related problem. problem is, as far as i know the last catalyst that supports the x19xx cards is 9.3

10.2 actually. It's the same game engine than TOMI as far as I know, so there must be something about the shadows that they implemented for this game.

okay, so you can use later catalyst with your card, great.

the last one is 11.2, have you tried it yet?

    http://sites.amd.com/us/game/downloads/Pages/downloads.aspx

you know what's weird? i just checked, and i got only 2 bars for shadow settings?!?!

got a radeon 4870, so i dont get why you got 3 with an older card? wtf?

but shadows look pretty fine for me

My mistake, there are only 2 bars.

OK this is what I'm talking about: weird looking shadows on characters faces.
Would be nice to hear from any of the developers:

Can I take a look at your DXDiag?

Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information". It will prompt you to save a file. Since I cannot receive attachments, I'll need you to cut and paste the contents into this message for me.

Our high quality shadows use a very expensive algorithm and it's likely your video card is just choking on it. Our low quality shadows use a very cheap and simple algorithm, but it kinda looks like crap.

This is something that needs to improve for sure, but it's likely not going to make it in for BTTF. Implementing a new shadow system is a very serious undertaking.

    [EDIT]
Just did a bit of research, and I see what's wrong. Different PS3.0 cards support different maximum shader lengths, and it looks like that particular card only supports the minimum PS3.0 length. This isn't enough for our most complicated high quality shadow shader. So it definitely won't work, no matter what you do with drivers or whatever. A newer (even slightly) GPU should have no problems. Sorry about that :-(

That being said, we will hopefully have better and cheaper shadows in future series.

Hey, that was a very informative reply, thank you! I was just curious since my GPU has full directX 9.0c support and it's top of the line, but apparently you can still improve further under certain API on the hardware side. Thanks!
