You have GOT to be kidding me...

There is nothing new under the sun.

The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Forty years after its original release, The Oregon Trail comes to the 3DS.

Does this count as part of the nostalgia boom?

Rated M for dysentery and mass animal carnage.

You say that like it's a bad thing?

It's kind of a nostalgia thing, but I think more than that it's about giving a new generation of children the same sorts of experiences that we had when we were growing up (using a generic "we" here).

Also, it's not like there's so massive a gap between any two consecutive Oregon Trail releases. This looks to be a port of the version that Gameloft has been putting out over the last couple years to iPhone, Facebook, and even the DSi. A 3DS version is less of a surprise and more of a no-brainer. And I know (from GameTap) that over the years the series has had a substantial number of PC sequels and spinoffs that have been pretty much completely ignored by everyone, but that probably found their way into middle school computer labs.

Semi-related. There is a zombie version of Oregan Trail playable online called Organ Trail. It uses the same old crappy graphics you remember from the game you played on floppy disks in 3rd grade. Basically the same formula, except you have to collect food, ammo, first aid kits, gasoline, etc., and you're driving out of Washington DC after a zombie apocalypse.

The sad thing about video games in general is, despite being a relatively new medium full of potential, pretty much everything has ended up being heavily derivative.

But remaking Oregon Trail isn't too big a deal. You want to talk about rehashes, how many freaking systems has Tetris been on now?

Tetris has been on about as many systems as there have been systems, perhaps more. Again, I think that is how it should be.

It's not rehashing, it's just stacking.

You know, I have never played Oregon Trail.

I guess I should give it a go sometime, huh.

Damn straight you should. You haven't lived until you've left risqué nonsense on your own headstone after dying of cholera. :D

... Of course, without the nostalgia, it may not hold up as well. Still a solid game, though.

Yep, I usually strolled into oregon with a broken leg and 75 % of my party dead or dying.
