To be fair Lugaru does not look exactly brilliant, defo go for Minecraft.
"Does not look exactly brilliant"?
-It was made by one guy.
-That one guy was in High School at the time.
-That one guy developed a new engine for his game.
-It's the first indie game to include ragdoll physics
And that's aside from the strengths of Lugaru as a game, which itself is fairly brilliant, and has a fairly intuitive beat-em-up style fighting system that has a unique method of control. Still, if you want to actually defend your point on it being "not too brilliant", go ahead, because I'd love to know what your reasoning is in spite of all this.
Still, it is obviously showing its age, and the comparison isn't particularly fair. Why not compare to another game in beta/alpha right now? Lugaru's sequel Overgrowth has an alpha release right now, and it's looking amazing. Yesterday, they posted the changes for the 123rd update to the alpha, and you can use this link to dig through all 123 past updates. This one is particularly fun.
Overgrowth has some amazing physics and AI, especially considering the small group working on it. Wolfire is the company that created the Humble Indie Bundle, their blog and twitter are ingenious, and they're pushing forward to create more and more complex games that are open source, free of DRM, on Mac and Linux, heavily mod-able, and(of course) fun and intuitive as hell.
This is by no means an insult to notch and his work, but I consider Wolfire and Frictional's games to be better works(or, at least, works that I derive more enjoyment and in which I spend more worthwhile time), overall, than Minecraft. Then again, I wasn't really much for LEGOs as a kid.
As a fan of both, (I retried Minecraft recently, Now seeing the appeal) Both are awesome.
In Minecraft, you are Steve?, the blocky guy inside a blocky world that can be larger than the earth. You can bend the world to your will and fight equally blocky monsters
In Lugaru, You are a rabbit that can beat the hell out of wolves on a quest to avenge his family,
I don't like to play sequels before playing the original. I will definitely be getting Overgrowth when it comes out. From the looks of it, it's a big upgrade. My computer isn't the best out there and I just hope it'll run.
I ended up getting both, and I'm getting more fun out of Lugaru.
The appeal of Minecraft is hard to grasp at first because the game does absolutely NOTHING to teach you how to play it. There is no tutorial, and I think this has scared off or confused a great number of people. Talk to experienced Minecraft players to get more of a feel of how to start. All the same, yes, Lugaru is great fun.

I have watched plenty of Minecraft videos, so I know what I'm doing for the most part. I have a nice place going. Though I can tell it's built near a dungeon because I hear zombies at all hours of the day. I am enjoying Minecraft immensely!
I just found Lugaru(though it's story is horrible) was a lot more fun. I'm at a part where wolves are kicking my ass. I can take out one, but he weakens me to the point where the next wolf can kill me in one or two hits. Aside from the ridiculous difficulty of those wolves, I'm having a great time with it.
Refer to my chart of the combat system above. Remember to vary your attacks, try to control the movement of the crowd rather than letting it surround you, and be conscious of their methods of attack.

I have a feeling this is going to be really one-sided, considering the popularity of Minecraft. I'm probably going to get Minecraft.
Depends on whether you want to be productive at any point in the near future.

you did not get the first or second humble indie bundle? Lugaru was in it.

Your call, Tough choice.

I wasn't even aware of The Humble Indie Bundle until recently.
