Sam and Max crash on execution (Steam)

Hi,

Whenever I attempt to launch any Sam and Max game, it crashes on me. I got the following from the event log:

I was playing the games a few months ago and they worked fine. I'm guessing it's some kind of driver, runtime compatibility or steam compatibility error as the game hasn't updated since then.

I can play BTTF fine (although I have that without Steam). I have the latest drivers and Windows (7) is fully patched.

There are a few people on the steam forums with the same issue, but nobody has any solutions.

EDIT: If it helps, S&M 30x flashes the screen black before crashing, S&M seasons 1&2 do not.
