prescription med warning!

edited March 2011 in General Chat
Hey guys! I've just had a horrible side affect from a prescription med called compazine (generic prochlorperazine) it's used mainly to help fight nausea and vomiting. If anyone here is ever prescribed this (I was given this prescription by a dentist) avoid it! I've had this incredibly intense feeling like I wanted to jump out of my skin, like a junkie looking for his next fix (although I have never and will never take non-prescription drugs) and i've just been reading that it's a fairly common side affect. I hope this is an appropriate topic for this board, I just wanted to warn as many people as I could about this medication since it's the worst feeling that i've ever had in my life (A million times worse then the wait for ToMI2)

Note:If you ever come in contact with this medication, benedryl is sopposed to counteract the side affects I've been taking some every 5 hours and i'm just starting to feel slightly better after a full day of this feeling.

Another prescription drug to be careful with is Tramadol (Ultram)... it amazes me doctors will still claim this is not an addictive drug - I don't have any personal experience with this, but a girl I know used to take those pills daily for several years... and I still remember back when she finally decided to quit taking them entirely.
I don't think I've ever seen someone look so sick, and according to her she had never actually felt anywhere near as sick every before either.
Basically, she described it as the absolutely worst flu you've ever had, and it lasted for near two full weeks.

I did some reading on the net after that experience and sure enough... this is a common experience for people quitting this drug.

Pretty scary stuff, these things are not something to take lightly.

The only personal experience I've had with something like this was several years ago, I was prescribed some drug that I've been trying hard to remember the name of here... but it's completely gone.
In any case, it made me feel really bad, but in this particular case I only had myself to blame... I had pretty much no eperience with drugs other than things like aspirin, and turns out I was too impatient and somehow thought I knew better than my doctor... meaning I didn't think the drug was working properly (turns out I had pretty low digestion) so I took a few times the prescribed dosage.
Really (!) dumb, thinking back it seems really odd I would have done something so stupid... in any case, it made me horrible nauseous and I didn't feel 'right' for a couple of days after.
Never told my doctor though, I was way too embarrased for that :o

oh my! I've heard of stuff like that happening, doctors prescribing drugs to elderly patients that are addictiv and not warning them because they'll probibly be dead before they need to get off them...

This is actually the 2nd time i've been prescribed compazine, however the first time I didn't really need it so I only took one pill and it didn't hurt anything... this time i took 5 in a 2 day period because my dentist wanted to see if it would keep me from gagging (which I do alot at the dentist) It's been about 8 hours since i started the benedryl... hopefully it will be gone tomorrow... I read somewhere though that it can take weeks to get it completly out of your system.

I've had some pretty bad experiences too. I would have thought the best thing is to ask your doctor about it before hand. They aren't going to flat out lie to you. Then as soon as you have any side-effects, go and see them again.

I'm definatly calling the doctor in the morning, I probibly won't go in, but I can ask via phone what I can do to combat this feeling... and who knows, I might not feel this way in the morning, it might be all better at that point... alot of the comments I read about this med say that with benedryl the feeling went away within 24 hours, however there are definatly other who this doesn't apply to.

oh and I almost forgot the best part... apperently the med is an anti-psychotic as well... the stupid dentist prescribed me a freaking anti-psychotic for nausea and vomiting.
