I love Labyrinth

edited April 2011 in General Chat
I love the movie Labyrinth, ever since I saw it when I was 5.

I even have a Labyrinth tattoo, was utterly in love with Jennifer Connelly for years, (god i wanted babies with her) love David Bowie and his music and....

Labyrinth is just beautiful. Jim Henson a legend.

I have it on Blu Ray. Movie is awesome. Hope they don't botch the sequel.

Never seen the movie, but seriously? A sequel?
  • edited March 2011
Wait I confused it with the Dark Crystal sequel. But, I have a hunch if that flies, they'll do a Labyrinth sequel.

Labyrinth, FYI, has one of the best soundtracks ever.

It's been about 20 years since I last saw that movie, but I used to love it as a kid. I would love to play adventure game Lucasfilm Games made from that movie, but you can't find it (at least legal copy) anywhere.

Labyrinth is a fun movie. Exceptionally weird, but fun.

They wanted to do a Labyrinth sequel, but since the rights for that story were split between two companies (or something) they ended up making an original story instead, and ended up with MirrorMask. That's a fun movie too.

MirrorMask.... whats it about? Any good?
  • edited March 2011
I like it a lot. It's the same sort of story about a girl from our world being transported into a magical world. The world in MirrorMask has a lot of CGI, but it's mostly done in the style of surrealist stop-motion stuff, and it has a pretty spooky vibe. I wouldn't say that it's as good as Labyrinth, but it is very good and is definitely worth watching if you're a fan of Jim Henson Company stuff.

There actually is a sequel to Labyrinth, although it's not a movie (yet). There's an original English-language manga called Return to Labyrinth that takes place 13 years after the movie and follows Toby as a teenager.

Bowie freaks me out in this film.

Yeah... fantasy films in the 80's were great..
  • edited April 2011
They sure don't make them like that anymore. Nowadays everything is done on computers...While I do appreciate the artistry and realism that goes into it, I think its just way cooler to actually build the sets and props needed to actually create the fantasy world.

Case in point. I think Labyrinth is comparable (a bit) to Alice in Wonderland in that it creates a fantasy world. But while I really love the Tim Burton version for its imagery, I think the fantasy world of Labyrinth is both more real, and more fantastic. It is more real in the sense that it actually exists. They had to build the set and figure out how to do all the puppets and everything. It is more fantastic because it looked more "fake" and out of this world.

And don't bother, i already know I'm going to get bashed for dissing CGI and Alice in Wonderland. I regret nothing!

I wasn't too impressed with Alice in Wonderland, and despite loving Tim Burton's style, this movie was pretty crap.

More Talk on The Power of the Dark Crystal is demanded!!!!
    Start talking!!!

    Well okay I'll start.
I love the fact that Omnilab is producing this Movie, along with te Spiereg brothers :D
And it's being shot in Australia :D
It combines puppetry with CGI (we'll see how that works out)
It brings back the most scary childhood villains, the Skeksis!
    The plot seems amazing.
Brian Fround the artist behind the world of Thra is back!
And I'm pretty sure they said it would be ready by next year?

I've had the first paperback volume of that for a while now. I keep meaning to get around to reading it. There's some very strange anime versions of the films characters, including a Japanese David Bowie!

Oh yes one of my all time favorites. It's such a sad fate that we have lost one of the greatest creative minds from our times. If Jim Henson was still alive today who knows what great work we would have. Nothing against those that have carried on the tradition, I'm just saying Henson was something special.

What a great film this is and probably my favorite Henson film. David Bowie was perfect as the Goblin King and I don't think anyone else could have pulled that roll off. That whole film was perfection if you ask me. Probably one of the best put together fantasy films of all time. When you think of the fact that Henson couldn't rely on CGI this film truly is a great accomplishment. The acting was solid the animitronics/puppets second to none and the soundtrack just as solid as the film. I'm always quoting the film or singing the Dance Magic song and people look at me like I"m crazy. I still think Underground is one of the best songs of all time.

Have any of you seen Tron Legacy? The white haired guy in the film (who from a distance I thought was Bowie at first) was playing off of Bowie and you could tell the influence was very much the Goblin King. He talked about it in an interview and I thought it was cool to see someone playing off of Bowie. Great topic OP.

I first saw Labyrinth as a kid and, for the longest time, I never really understood why Sarah was dressed how she was and acting out a character from a book at the start of the movie.

Then I revisited the movie a la The Nostalgia Chick's review, wherein she points out that Sarah is LARPing... by herself. "Ohhhh... I get it. That's stupid," I said.

You never acted out stuff when you were younger? Lots of people do that.

I'm just saying, I have friends that were in drama and who later went into acting that wouldn't have hesitated to act out roles like that, even in the years I knew them in college.

Davies, some guy here found a woman at one of those conventions. They are dating now...Wizards are in now, I can totally see the women getting excited for Wizards with long beards in blue...Did you step up your RPG-ing?

Cast any spells or anything, did you, get methrill? Step up your RPG, son! You can get some thing from some one from a convention, just remember to wear the appropriate body armors in the appropriate places! And if you have to use a lie detector to make sure she is being honest about her past...

I always assumed she was just rehearsing for a play, but thinking about it now, it would seem that she's rehearsing for an imaginary play that she performs for her own entertainment
