The 1001 arabian nights

edited April 2011 in General Chat
Hey! Does anyone know anything about the various volumes in publication of the 1001 nights? I've been wanting to read them for ages but I'm torn about which volumes are best...

Alladin was Chinese. That's all I know but it's quite interesting. Sorry it doesn't help much.

He also wasn't originally included in the 1001 nights, along with ali-baba

I've read it and it's great. Too bad i can't recommend you any publishers since i read on spanish.
Mine is 4 volumes with a total of 2967 pages. Since it's so extense i guess prices are never cheap, although affordable.

Search on wikipedia for the best english translation. Get the name of the translator and then when you look for different editions search for his name.

Although this is true, try to find an edition that include this stories. They are classics and their addition doesn't interfere at all with the whole work.

As a final warning, avoid children publications or any other edition that cuts all the violence, sex, and religious content.
It's heavy on all that, but thats the point. Without religion, sex and violence it's not 1001 nights.

Hope you can get your hands on it.

I found an edition I think I'll be happy with, it's by Lyons it's 3 volumes, roughly 3,000 pages, it's a translation of the calcutta II edition of the nights... it's got all the religious content, sex and violence, the nights are clearly labeled (night 1, night 263, etc.) and it includes the storys of aladdin and ali-baba as well as an alternate ending to the 7th journey of sinbad... while I'm waiting for the book i've been trying to read as much as I can about the tales, the wiki article is fascinating, unfortunatly I can't seem to find much more information online about the tales, you know, fun facts, history, etc. from any other source =(

I don't know about the book, but when you read it you should definitely play Scheherazade by Rimsky-Korsakov. It will make the whole experience 20% more awesome.

I love it, too. Actually, after I posted the link I listened to it again because it's almost impossible for me to let an opportunity to listen to that piece pass me by. Ah, Korsakov, why are you so awesome?

I listened to it about a hundred times in a row so that I could learn the music well enough to be a ringer for my high school orchestra, even though I was in college. I really, really wanted to go to Disneyland with them. It worked! :D

I got my copy, and I'm super pleased...

I was looking at another translation and that translation had a note that the translater chose not to specify when each night ended, and just continue the story because writing that sheherazade ended each nights tale and started the next was somewhat redundant, and it was something the translator chose not to do...

the volumes I bought have each night distinctly labled, beginning and ending with reference to shaharazade beginning/ending her tale for the night, I cannot help but feel that even though it's somewhat redundant, it's necissary... the 1001 arabian nights are based off sheharazade's desperate plan to stop the cycle of beheadings, I can't help but think that distincly lableing each night is necissary because of the fact that it IS the 1001 nights, without the framing story of sheherazade brought back each night, it ceases to be the 1001 arabian nights and instead becomes a collection of fables from the middle east...

I'm to day 5 so far and i'm finding it fascinating...

Exactly, without the nights labeled the main story of Sheherazade lose all point. There is a reason why she is doing that and in that way.

Yeah it defeats the point of her, you know, saving her life.
