Wii HD

edited April 2011 in General Chat
Well, it's that time again: rumors of Nintendo's next console are beginning to pick up.

First, people started to report the Wii will be receiving a price cut.
Next, the rumors started.

Supposedly, it will be revealed at E3 2011.
Supposedly, it uses Bluray.
Supposedly, it's more powerful than the 360 or PS3.
Supposedly, it will have a controller with a touch screen.
Supposedly, it will have a controller with a HD screen.
Supposedly, that screen will be six inches.
Supposedly, developers already have development kits.

Now that's a lot of supposedly's. So, what really will happen? I guess we'll be finding out soon.

I just hope they don't skimp on the graphics. I don't care much about them personally, but it'd be nice to start getting multi-console releases on a Nintendo console again. Maybe some of them retroactively, if we're lucky.

Also, an HDD and an improved online/DLC service would be nice. I'm tired of getting screwed on Rock Band stuff.

It being more powerful won't really make a difference 'til the other two companies upgrade as well. Most games are still going to be designed with the idea of being able to run them on the 360 and PS3 in mind, then ported to the Wii2 with a slight graphics update. The only games that will really utilized the system's power will be 1st party games... which means some totally beautiful Zeldas and Metroids.
  • edited April 2011
Just a shame that metroid and zelda won't be due sequels for quite a while, given the fact that the last metroid game underperformed, and skyward sword/OoT 3D aren't even out yet.

I'm still praying for a Zero Misson-esque update for Metroid II.

Oh, that should be the least of your worries. From another forum I go to:
Just to drop a little knowledge on what to expect should that GPU spec alone pan out:
R700 is the codename for only one GPU; the 4870x2.

There's no way that would end up in the system but if Nintendo are using a GPU that is more than 10x as powerful as Xenos in their dev kits, then this thing is going to be no slouch.

Xenos is the 360's internal GPU name.

    That sounds cool.

However, there is one thing I don't like about Nintendo consoles.

And that is the slowness of retail price decreases, especially on Nintendo produced titles.

That might seem stingy, but its hard to have a strong library when games cost £40 retail release over here.

Plus the cost of this console could be very hefty.
Heck, If its anywhere near the £400 mark, then I might as well get a new PC.

I'm very intrigued. Looking forward to the reveal at E3.

Wii is cheaper than the 360 or PS3.

Sounds promising. Can't wait for the reveal.

3DS wasn't cheaper than PSP ;D (It worked out to a little more than the PSP in the UK)

The Wii was indeed cheaper, but don't forget, the console wasn't much more powerful than the Gamecube.

If the new Nintendo console is as powerful as it is rumoured, it will cost quite a bit. Plus Nintendo normally try to make a profit on the hardware, so I don't see them undercutting it.

I do hope they make use of the 3DS much more than the Wii used the DS and the Gamecube used the GBA.

Imagine the console taking advantage of the 3DS 3D screen, augmented reality, and its extra horsepower.

PSP has been out for like around 6 years now, your argument is invalid.

Said hardware is way cheaper now than they it was when the 360 and PS3 came out. Hell, Nintendo can easily make something that outranks the 360/PS3 right now and still keep it relatively cheap.

I guess it will all be based on how well the 3DS does.
If it does good enough, they may charge that bit more.

Plus lets not forget the console may have an additional gimmick revealed at E3 that could inflate the cost a bit.

But speculation on price, so early is a bit silly.
Lets just hope these rumours are true! :D

It's at around 2m worldwide right now, and doing better than the DS was at around the same time in its life so far. It'll slow down until more good games come out though.

Controller with an "HD" screen on it.

But yeah, lets hope it's true. Honestly, it's unlikely to be false at this point.

I'm curious to know if my Virtual Console and WiiWare downloads will transfer over to this new guy or if they're going to expect me to pay again.

Yeah, I'm going to be a little upset if I have to pay for all the Virtual Console games again.

I figure they'll find someway of making the transfer though. They didn't let the Gamecube games go to waste when they featured compatiability within the Wii system itself. I'm sure they'll think of something.
  • edited April 2011
It can just be as simple as letting you download them again on the new system, though is there some kind of account associated with them like there is on XBox Live?
  • edited April 2011
Didn't they do some sort of transfer with the DSi and 3DS? I imagine it'd be similar.

The PSP Go was £230 at release (last year? I can't remember). The 3DS was £190->£220 at release (Under £200 at everywhere apart from HMV, Game and gamestation it seemed).

If the wii 2 is to be more powerful than the PS360, then it will doubtlessly be more expensive than they currently are. Probably around the 360 was when it launched.

I seriously hope the screen on the controller is true, but I can't see it being both HD and touch. Too expensive.

Yes, DSiWare games will be transferable to the 3DS starting in May.

If this is true, RIP Wii 2.

No one is going to pay $100+ for a controller.

Also, I really hope that whatever they do for controllers, they package it with both a motion controller and a traditional controller. The biggest downside on Wii is that it doesn't come with a standard controller, so every game is forced to use some kind of special Wii controls, even if it makes no sense for that specific game.

yeah the wii 2 will fail with those prices.
Also, WHY WOULD A CONTROLLER NEED A SCREEN?????
I saw how 2 screens with the DS could work back then, I can kind of see how a touchscreen on the back of the the NGP would work, but a screen on a controller I cannot see.

    *cough*dreamcast*cough*

I'm hoping that the touch screen is going to be more akin to the DS screen they already have.

The largest one of those was 4 inches (the DSi XL).

I imagine they are probably going to source that either from the same people they get it from already, or link up with some mobile phone manufacturer.

Though I still would have preffered that they just used that touch functionality with the DS and the 3DS. (As many will have at least one of those), and they release a normal controller on top of that.

That would be awesome. They could manage it more easily with the 's3DS, given that it already has motion sensing/gyroscope in it. All they need to add is an IR camera, and it's all set.

By now, though, I think Nintendo knows what they're doing.

I can imagine the jokes about stroking my six inches on the wii now....

The Zelda: Skyward Sword screenshots from E3 are in 720p, which is higher than the Wii can pull off. We haven't heard anything about a release date yet.

What do you think are the chances they do the same thing they did with Twilight Princess on the Gamecube/Wii?

I don't think they will. Or at least I hope not. They usually release their trailers and stuff in HD. I think the Mario Galaxy 2 trailers were in HD too.

I know I should be excited, but for some reason I'm not. I guess I just can't really hit another high after the game announcements the 3DS has had, but I am also somewhat disgruntled about the Wii still.

I don't get why there aren't more adventure games ported to the wii. It's perfect.

Instead of the Wii 2, I prefer to call it the Wii wii.
