Have you tried disabling your security software?

Aldo, if you post a dxdiag log, i can see if i can find anything.

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Then zip the file and attach it to a reply in this Thread.

Well here is the Dxdiag file.

As far as my security software, its actually my debugger for Visual Studio that keeps catching the error.

Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800M GTS
    Driver Date/Size: 5/27/2009 16:04:00, 7593472 bytes

I would try installing the latest Graphics driver and running the DirectX updater.

Yea, did both. It didnt fix it. I also disabled my Just-In-Time debugger on Visual Studio and still didnt work.

Did you try a clean boot yet?

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG --> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. Click on OK
    8. Click Restart.
    9. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Run --> Type MSCONFIG--> Click OK
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

You Might also try resetting the graphics preferences. You can get the file and instructions from here.

Back to the Future Ep5 isnt in the .zip file. Is it safe to use one of the files from the other episodes?

I have the game installed with Steam. When I did this it would install or launch Steam for me

I also just tested the previous episodes. I've played Ep 1-4 before, but now the only ep that will play is #3

Are you running any other programs at the same time? (other than steam)

Only Google Chrome to be on this forum. Oh and AVG Free in the tray

Changing the file didnt work either

You might want to try temporarily closing AVG, also try the prefs files for the other episodes that aren't working.

AVG is one of the programs that can interfere with steam. I was hoping to cover those by the clean boot... Can you try disabling it?

Ive never had problems with AVG before, but I will try disabling it

    Still didnt work

On the steam page it says
AVG 7.5, Norton/Symantec and Nod 32 software has been known to cause game crashes. AVG 7.5 must be fully removed from your system in order to prevent these crashes.

Still didnt fix it. Besides, eps 1-4 worked before with AVG installed

Bummer. It was worth a shot, because Security Software like that gets updated a lot, and therefore can break anything at any time.

This is a long shot, but can you post the directory in your documents, and the directory in your programs where the games are saved and launched?
  • edited August 2011
    C:\Users\Aaron\Documents\Telltale Games\

    C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common
  • edited August 2011
    That's where they should be...

in Each of those is the naming scheme the same? i.e. you don't have one say bttf_101 and another say episode 2, and/or another say Outatime?

attached are screen shots of my folders. I have not modified theses folders in anyway.
  • edited August 2011
I think that this might be your issue. Can you try re-installing one more time, except this time after uninstalling the games delete all of the files associated with the games from both folders (copy your saves elsewhere if you want to hang onto them). The games should then recreate the files named as they're supposed to be. After that launching the games should create each folder in documents with a prefs.prop file.

    Yea, still didnt work

Ok. My laptop got messed up from an unrelated matter and I had to re-install Windows and now it works. No idea what was messed up.

Thanks for all your help guys.
