Awesome! Been waiting and hoping for this since I heard about Lord of the Rings Online going f2p! It hasn't happened yet but is expected to by the end of the year.

So when do I get to lay down a fat stack of cash to buy my own Enterprise?

I see this will be one of those freemium type games...

I'm extremely weary of these types of games, I've never played any of them myself for more than a few minutes but from what I gather - if one gets really involved in freemium type games, they can become a hell of a lot more expensive than a subscription based model could ever hope to be... with some players having spent in excess of $100 000!
Let's hope this one doesn't turn out anything like that and that the stuff you can buy won't benefit you in actual gameplay but rather only cosmetically.

It's being brought F2P by Perfect World, right? Perfect World deals entirely in cosmetic changes.

Uh what? No other way around. I'm a hardcore Korean MMO pay for advantage player.

    Nice, I had no idea.

Apparently, so far the F2P penalties are much better than the ones for Champions Online. The full list is here http://startrekonline.com/f2p_features. Of course it's all subject to change, but the current list doesn't look too bad. There are some features that are limited or locked out entirely, but very few and not very important ones. That I care about anyway. I'm just happy I'll be able to play it. I hate paying a subscription to play a game. I'm looking at you, XBL.

Color me skeptical about the game.

I like Star Trek alot (more than Star Wars, tbh) but from what I hear STO is largely combat based and the missions are highly repetitive.

Until they slide the premium ships to the gold account, I'll hold.

I feel sorry for the guys who forked out for a lifetime subscription. Ouch.

I think this'd be good if the game didn't require a starship to runl.

    What?

Yeah, I don't get it either.

I feel like the minimum requirements are rather high. It was rather late when I made the above comment, so I accidentally put an l at the end of run instead of '(space) it'.

There are video settings you can lower. But you do need at least a Dual Core according to the sys requirements. I, however, managed to run with decent framerate on a single-core Pentium 4, 3 GHz with 3GB of RAM with all the video settings lowered.

Hey, gotta advance technology. Make a use for all these new processors and video cards. Times change and system requirements get higher. That's just the way it is.

I bought this game when it first came out. Paid full price for the deluxe edition too! Such a Star Trek fan, am I.

I really, really wanted to like the game. I gave it many chances to win me over. Ultimately, it just lacked the polish and charm of the shows. Sadness.
