Gerry Harding and Sara Harding

edited November 2011 in Jurassic Park
Okay.. here's a little bit of weirdness for you.

For the folks that read the novel, you know that Gerry Harding is chief veterinarian of Jurassic Park. His daughter is Sara Harding 14 years of age (in the game). Okay, now that we know this. Ian Malcolm is an adult.

Lets fast forward into The Lost World which takes place 4 years later.
Sara Harding, (the little girl in the game), is Ian Malcolm's girlfriend. She would be 18 years of age... but in the movie, she's obviously maybe in her late 20s, early 30s.

Am I missing something.. or did they make Sara Harding a little too young, mis-aligning the story line a little bit? o.O

Ohhh okay.. so they dodged that loophole. I wonder how "Sara Harding" will be brought up then.

in the game. Harding's daughter name is Jess Harding.
so i think he has two daughters.

I don't think Sarah Harding will be mentioned at all. I think we're just supposed to assume that she's unrelated.

Chances are Sarah Harding, if mentioned at all, will be mentioned as Jess' older sister, or something along those lines.

Yeah, I think as far as the movies go, the two aren't releated. In fact, I think the novel only hints at the fact that they might be releated without actually saying that they are.

True, but in an interview Chrichton did confirm that Sarah Harding is Gerry Harding's daughter

Yeah thers a moment in the Novel that Sarah mentions her father working at a game preserve on an island off of Costa Rica, and Malcom looks at her and says something that hints strongly at the relation, but I forget what...then the Rex's attack I think haha

so If there is a relation in the game, I'd go with big sister, and even if they don't mention her, I'd still just assume it. Personally at least.

That's a good idea right there.

I checked the novel for the exact quote. Here it is:
She moved the transducer along the baby's leg. "And my father was a vet."
Malcolm looked up sharply. "Your father was a vet?"
"Yes, at the San Diego Zoo. He was a bird specialist. But I don't see... Can you magnify this?"
Arby flicked a switch. The image doubled in size.

    (Page 281, The Lost World)

It's implied that Gerry and Sarah Harding are related. What does not at up is that, in the first few chapters of the book, we learn that Malcolm and Sarah befriended one another (and might possibly have been romantically involved.) You could question why Malcolm never inquired about Harding's parents; after all. they spend a lot of time together.

In the film(s), the connection is not made. It seems to me that this will not happen in the game either. From what I've heard, Michael Crichton had a habit of giving several characters from different (not related to one another) novels the same, or similar, surnames.

Or you could put your mind inside Crichton's and kill nearly every damn character from the first novel off. Ironically resurrecting one that died :P

Guys, Sarah isn't in the game, it's Jess Harding. Let this thread die.

I don't think we are supposed to believe that Sarah is Dr. Harding's daughter in the film continuity, unless it is expressly said so in the game or in a future movie. It was true in the books, but the movies played pretty fast and loose with characters and relationships. For example, the movie version of the Lost World combined two characters, Arby and Kelly, into one and made her Malcolm's daughter. In the novel, neither child was any relation to any of the other characters. (So I guess in the movie we lose a daughter, Sarah, but gain another, Kelly.)

Sarah Harding herself in the film is a composite of several characters from the novel: Book Sarah was strictly an animal behaviourist, and the paleontologist of the group was a character called Dr. Levine. As much as they changed and shuffled around characters, who knows if the daughter aspect was meant to survive the adaptation.

I wish Levine was in the Movie, instead of "Anti-Gun" Van Owen, who basically has the blood of the dead hunters solely on his hands LOL

Yeah me too. More death and meyhem was caused by his actions than by the "bad guys." I can see the point of combining two characters into one to avoid having an over-crowded cast, but then why create brand new characters like Nick to add into the mix? It would have worked perfectly fine to have Malcolm, Levine, Sarah, Doc and Eddie as in the book (the kids could have been left out, as they didn't contribute much), and then Dodgson and his small team as the antogonists instead of the giant InGen Army.

well i looked on wiki and it says this

Dr. Gerald Harding ("Gerry") is Jurassic Park's chief veterinarian. He accepted the job because he wanted to become famous for being the first person to write up zoo guidelines for dinosaurs. When the group first runs into him, he is looking after a sick stegosaur. With the help of Ellie Sattler, he finds the source of their sickness and is able to treat it. Being the only doctor on the island, he is the one who treats Malcolm after he is attacked by a tyrannosaur. He is attacked by a velociraptor during the assault on the visitor's center, but ultimately survives his time on the island. Though it is not addressed directly in either of the books, Michael Crichton later revealed that Sarah Harding is Gerry's daughter

    but idk

Gerry has 2 daughters, no wife is mentioned. The daughters are Sarah and Jess.

Alan Johnson already spoke about the subject a few months ago:
Gerry Harding's daughter in our game is not Sarah Harding, rather a new character. As far as I know, Sarah Harding was never actually mentioned to be Gerry's daughter in the novels or the films, but the novel's version of her was stated to be his daughter by Michael Crichton. Our game is based on the Jurassic Park film, not the novels.

all this makes me hope there's an Easter Egg mention of her to settle all the confusion lol
