is there any way to get the game to play in window mode?

    go to the graphic options and uncheck "Fullscreen"

    FYI, in Windows you can hit ALT + Enter to switch back and forth between Fullscreen and Windowed modes on most programs. On Mac, Command + F does the same thing. :)
