Call Of Duty series why is this a must play ?

edited December 2011 in General Chat
Ok I decided to pay the money and buy MW3 and I still don´t get why people love this game so much.

Granted I liked the first Modern Warfare but that this series has become the must play games each year ?? I just don´t get it.

The whole Elite thing is stupid I don´t get why I want to pay for these services that I don´t really need anyway.

The Mp has not gone through that much of a change the graphics engine is starting show it´s age and frankly I thought Black Ops was more fun both the Campaign and the MP.

But that this has become the ultimate game that everybody wants to play I just don´t get it.

You must play it because your 12 year old classmates say it's the greatest game ever.
Seriously I think you are asking this in the wrong forum here.

I happen to be 25 years old but I still don´t get why this game is so popular I know people who are older than me who love it.

One guy I know is an Afghan vet and he loves those games go figure.

Because you kick ass in it.

Well if you are not a 12 year old boy there is no reason to play these games.

    Multiplayer.

That's why people love these games so much. Because the multiplayer lets you go round and kill people.

...that's about it. It's one of the great mysteries why people insist that these games are better than others when they clearly are not. Complete and utter mystery. Kind of like how Halo became so popular because of its multiplayer when the SP campaign was padded up the ass and extremely repetitive, and nobody ever called it out on that fact until years later and then everyone jumped on the bandwagon and it became a 'thing' to say Halo sucks and now I've gone off-topic and I'll stop now.

So yeah, stupidly popular multiplayer. There's your answer.

    Shrugs

It's a loophole. People play it because their friends play it. And their friends play it because people play it.

It's the "Vicious Circle of CoD".

I liked how there was a mission in Black Ops that you could get through without firing a shot.

Though if you want the REAL experience, without paying a cent, there's always the alternative: Duty Calls.

You have two option regarding CoD.

Play it and be a moron mouthbreather.

Don't play it and be a condescending snob.

    Choose wisely friends!!

I went with 'don't play it', mostly because I don't like online multiplayer games. And here I am, snobbing it up!

My hatred of FPS has been mentioned over and over. I don't think I really need to say I also hate these games...but I did anyway. I respect the voice casting...they always seem to get great voice actors, but the games still suck. I admit they have their place...if you enjoy the military life, but are out of shape or a @#$$¥, these games are for you. I just don't like them.

I did like AVP though... but Aliens are just awesome.

Wait a minute. That's a logical leap. Games are escapism. I'm in great shape, can run a marathon, and have taken mixed martial arts for years. I don't consider myself a pussy and won't back down From a *necessary* fight. I play these games because they allow me to do something I can't in real life. I experience something I wouldn't anywhere else because my life is devoted to scholarly research. So stop being a snob. It's just entertainment.

#1, it was a joke. I don't take any games or anything game related seriously.
#2, If you are fully capable, you CAN do it in real life :P

I think it's more of a social thing than anything else. People want to play what their friends are playing. Also, aggressive marketing, and tons of money. The production value of the CoD games is extremely high. They might not be amazing in terms of actual gameplay, but they're certainly impressive and easy on the eye.

Also, the favicon to that Duty Calls website looks like a little Lucasarts man.

A lot of Call of Duty players (not all) tend to be non-gamers, in least in the sense that they don't play anything else. I have several friends that have a 360 that is exclusively used for Call of Duty. My friend Jen has a total of 60 achievement points over the three years she's had her console because she has only ever played Modern Warfare 2, Black Ops, and Modern Warfare 3, and their achievements are almost entirely offline. And she plays it ALL THE TIME. The reason that Call of Duty's sales numbers are so high is because there's apparently a large population of people who simply don't play any other games. I've tried to get her to play other multiplayer games but she just won't. She won't play Halo because she "hates the shields", she wouldn't play Transformers War for Cybertron because "robots are stupid", she won't try Assassin's Creed because it "sounds sooooo boring"... etc. I eventually gave up.

Personally I don't understand the concept of looking around, seeing Assassin's Creed and Mass Effect and Red Dead Redemption and Skyrim and whatever else and thinking "...meh, it can't possibly be better than this" but apparently a lot of people think that way.

co-worker plays CoD, Battlefield, Racing games and the Ratchet series... He thinks any game under 15-10hrs isnt worth picking up(the Ratchet series falls in this but I didn't bother arguing). He went to Best Buy on black friday to pick up the new Battlefield I think and the cashier assumed...and asked if he would also like arkham city for 30 bucks(that's half price everyone outside NA)...he said no. idiot.

dont worry i am 18 and i dont know why people play it either, there are some war games that are good like battlefield and games like that, but thats all, the call of duty games seem unrealistic to me because of how things are done on them, pretty much i prefer games like age of empire or jurassic park and others
  • edited November 2011
Age of Empires is the best. Played hundreds upon hundreds of hours of Age of Kings as a kid (though I only recently actually beat the game. Thing was hard even on standard settings).

People love to pay $120 a year to play the same glitchy game on a 6 year old engine with very minor tweaks between games.

There's a baby on a tricycle cheat?! Or is that only in the third game that I played once and probably won't again.

I do know about the superdog that flies around the screen, the sports car that can kill things, and the random dude with the rocket launcher.

Oh and the monkey boy dude. Him too.

well supposedly swbfIII is in development and a possibility of it coming 2012! It could take over the battlefield and call of duty franchise

Ah, Age of Empires the first one!. I see. I didn't play around with as many cheats in that game, because I didn't play it as often as AoEII. And even then, I really only used the rocket car and the rocket launcher dude because I liked to see things explode.

Maybe it's to compete with Medal of Honor.

heck maybe even the star wars games are even better, i remember when Star Wars battlefront 2 came out, i played it all day long, had duels with my friends and brothers, just cant wait till a third one comes out, there is quite a few people that even still play this, mostly on computer though, then star wars battlefront came too psp, i got the game for it renegade squadron, it is cool, but i wouldnt mind having it for PS3 and X-Box360, more people play them than the psp anyways, i still play the psp every now and then, but not as much as I used too. It was great playing as darth vader/Anakin skywalker and going around killing rebels. Also play as yoda, Jango Fett, Boba Fett, General grevious, chewbacca, princess leia, padme amidalla, luke sywalker, darth sidious, darth maul, han solo, obi won kenobi, ki audi mundi, the blue chick, and more

Oh, the blue chick! I remember her! What a memorable character, beloved of Star Wars fans everywhere. I hope she's in the next Battlefront game that was canceled!

As long as Lucasarts continues to poop out terrible video games, then yes, it might really be dead.
