YouTube's new layout

edited December 2011 in General Chat
I hate it. I used to be able to view my subscriptions on the front page categorized by uploader. Now it's jumbled up by organizing solely by the latest video uploaded, which means all the uploaders are in a confusing mess. And there's no way to customize it. Also, they used to go horizontally across the screen and now they just list them one by one and you have to scroll ALLLLLL the way down to see them all. Horrible setup. I hear they were trying to copy a more TV-like format or something.

I think it sucks.

CHANGE? FOR THE BETTER?!? HOW DARE THEY. They'll be hearing from my lawyers about this!

I was one of the few people who liked the old setup from the beginning. It worked for me and I could find almost everything. Then the sub boxes started breaking and I could only find some things. Now I don't know if they fixed them because I can't find videos anyway.

I just plain don't care anymore.
  • edited December 2011
I just want to delete the videos Ive already seen.

I also don't care about who commented what, and I CERTAINLY don't want that video to then appear in my sub box as priority over the videos I subscribed to.

You know theres a box you can check to only see subscriptions right?

Well, here's the link for those of you who don't like the new homepage:

That's awesome. I wonder how long that will last. It's a much better design layout. And I always have it set to only see my subscriptions. The new layout is just horribly confusing and cumbersome.

BUT. Then any announcements they make via their channel, I can't see/read.

The only change Youtube has ever made the did not pay off in the end has been HTML5, and I'll assume that'll become better integrated once it becomes mandatory as it's rather recent.

Any layout change to any website will be universally hated by all of its users. Until the next change of course. It's a basic law of the internet.

    Lovely.
The home screen is honestly my only complaint as I dont check out the channels anyway and they didn't do much to the rest besides a change in look, so I hope this work around stays.

Thank you so much for that awesome tip, the new YouTube design is a huge step backwards for navigating subscriptions.
  • edited December 2011
I...didn't even notice. I suppose that's because I never use the home page except for an initial search point.

I like the new site. It makes it easier to see what videos are actually new. The option to switch to a subscriber folder view would be nice for some, but isn't it a bit irrelevant? After all, you like all the providers you subscribe to, else you would unsubscribe, right?

    YOUTUBE!

    WHY U SO GREY?!!!?

Please go back to white... I liked white... :(

But they're not organized in order anymore. Case and point:

    Old (organized by uploader):

New (scroll all the way down to see the jumbled mess):

I still don't see the problem with any of this. All of the people's points boil down to 'I can't see more than one video on the main page at the same time', which is completely understandable, as Youtube wants you using their service more frequently so as not to miss videos.
  • edited December 2011
If they want more people using their service then they need to keep it easy to see and user friendly and not complicate it by making people have to mess with it more to get what they want. The new home page is visually confusing and a crowded mess.

But now there is a pinned favorites system so you are capable of accessing the most significant (to you) of your subscribed content providers with extreme ease right on the home page.

My point is it produces more work not less. And that's always a bad thing when you're trying to advance design.

I favour all my 75 channels I have subscribed to the same. This system makes no sense to me.

The problem is that these videos are in order of upload. If the uploader didn't upload it public but turned it public after (e.g. after it processed completely) I might miss his video because it is buried under other videos. I have subscribed to guys that are doing Let's plays and tend to upload sets of 6 or more videos. This jams up this list a lot. Bad luck for other people I subscribed to.

Second problem: I no longer have control over the videos on this list. The videos you watched don't disappear and you can no longer remove them manually after you have seen them and don't need them "advertised any longer". The list stays the same until someone uploads something new.

Third: Just wait until the next YT error when they will not show you new videos for 1 to 2 days. Then you will get a whole new list and because you cannot modify it you will miss content you wanted to see. This sucks for you and the uploader which put a lot of effort in these videos. It was bad enough with the last design it will be far worse with this one.

Yes. I'm saying the option should be there for those who want it, but I prefer it as the blog lay-out. The page in general looks smarter too.

I don't really use subscriptions, but I can see why some people who do would be very annoyed by this.

One positive for me is that you can now delete individual videos out of your viewing history without clearing the whole thing. The inability to do that used to drive me crazy.

New fix-link because they discovered the old one and made it look just the same as the broken layout.

I get "authorization error" at the top.

Also, couldnt they have just left the /home the way it is and the main page like so, that way both sides are satisfied? Or just add an option to go back.

Why does it have to be the way they want it to be?
What do they possibly gain for removing that choice?

They scare me off their site by doing that.

The Authorization Error appears to affect nothing, so I'm ignoring.

Time to find unnofficial downloads to fix this.
  • edited December 2011
We could complain to Youtube and beg for the old layout back.

Or we could just wait for them to "fix" the layout again.

Patience? What the fuck is THAT?
