To the Moon

edited February 2012 in General Chat
Surprised there isnt a thread allready as theres been alot of hype around gaming websites. I used to think Telltale were the best at interactive fiction but playing 'To the Moon' made me realise Telltale need to get rid of their trivial puzzles for this type of game, and use the talent available to them to make a new IP. Take a risk and use some imagination, im sick of these movie/comic spinoffs.

Kan Reives Gao at Freebird games has shown you guys how its done, its not pretending to be an adventure game, just straight up interactive fiction with a worthwhile story to tell. Its sad, heartwarming and very funny at the same time. (admittedly there are a few strange mini-games in there) He's also planning episodic sequels so time will tell if he can keep up this level of quality

Anyone who hasn't played it yet is in for a treat, it's some of the most beautiful and moving storytelling i've ever come accross, not just in games. Plus it has a fantastic soundtrack to boot

I've had my eye on this one for a while, the price tag's a bit hefty though. Hopefully it shows up in an indie bundle before I cave and but it.

Yeah £10 is a bit steep for a 4-5hr story driven game, but he said he was trying to get it onto Steam, so hopefully it'll be part of a sale or a bundle when it does. I was sold on it and needed more 1hr after doing what doing what Coolsome is doing

I liked it alot. The controls where kinda sticky though. I did lol at the
    RPG with the squirrel
. But £10 seems a lot for 4/5 hours of gameplay. Hector(each) was half that if memory recalls.

Wow... this looks and sounds beautiful. Thematically it seems somewhat reminiscent of Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, which I loved.

The US price is $11.99. I think I'll try the free hour tonight and if it lives up to expectations, play the rest instead of seeing a movie. Could well end up being better value for money.

It definately appealed to me because of the Eternal Sunshine comparisons, love that movie as well. The structure is also similar, as well as stuff like Irreversible and Memento. Hopefully you'll get a good idea from the trial, being told in reverse means the first hour might be confusing, but everything is answered so well without being complex, by the end the I had to put more money down on the soundtrack!

I'll check on the forums, I remember some people having that same problem, and they were PM'ing codes to the people it affected, but I'm sure he tweeted that the problem had been fixed

edit: I think the quickest way is to just post it in the troubleshooting forum and they'll PM it to you

I saw a review for it a few days back and it got me curious. Unfortunately I already have a ridiculous amount of games to play so I refrained from buying it.

I'll perhaps wait to see if there's a steam release.

Finished it was a lot of fun with lots of deferences to Doctor Who and other shows I liked and a good storyline and characters. I hope there is an episode 2. My favourite part was when
they go mad and try yelling at him to go to the moon at different points in his time stream
    .

yes!! Loved Watts' heroic attempt in the School gym..."Report?"...."utter failure".
    .
He said the main theme for Ep2 has been written! might take a while then...but Neil and Eva make up a nice template for an episodic series. Loved some of the references, the Plants vs Zombies mini game was criticised in the reviews but I got a laugh out of it

haha in that space between 'meh too short for a tenner' and 'hey ive got a spare tenner'. You must have caved somewhere between them :p

In other (mostly gamespot related) news:

-hurray To the Moon wins Best Story of 2011 on Gamespot

-Gamespot do a 1hr show talking about To the Moon: http://www.gamespot.com/to-the-moon/videos/the-hotspot-to-the-moon-12-2-11-6347041

tbh I think its one guy (Kevin van Ord) at Gamespot forcing this game on people

Is this on Steam yet? I want to play it, but I prefer to keep all my games in one (okay, 2, damn you GOG) place.

The game was submitted to steam at the start of November but he said it can be difficult to get accepted. Especially as he put 'Mojo' as one of the key features. If you go to page 6 of this thread, Kan Gao Reives says he wants to give out Steam codes to all existing customers if Valve will allow it. If possible, that's awesome:

    http://freebirdgames.com/forum/index.php?topic=3379.0

This is what he says regarding Steam codes:
Oh, I'd personally definitely give out Steam codes to existing customers if Valve allows me to -- I'm pretty sure that it's possible since I've seen it happen with other cases, but I'm not 100% certain.

Finished playing this game yesterday while watching Up for the second time. I loved the atmosphere in this game, though I wish I'd been able to make time to play through it in one sitting. There's no real challenge here, but the story more than makes up for that.
