Sam and Max does not run anymore

edited January 2012 in Game Support
When I first installed the games (on Steam), they were working perfectly fine. But a couple days ago, they just stopped working. I didn't install any new drivers or anything, they just don't run. All my other games still work fine, so I have no idea why it stopped working.

My specs:

Windows 7
4gb RAM
Geforce 9800gt

I tried turning DEP on and off, and that doesn't do anything. I've also checked the file integrity, deleted the game and reinstalled it, and still not working.

Can anyone please help me? This is kind of ridiculous that a game will just stop working.

What exactly happens when you try to launch the game?

I get a "sammax104.exe has stopped working" with the following error codes:

    Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
    Application Name: sammax104.exe
    Application Version: 0.0.0.0
    Application Timestamp: 46bb4b70
    Fault Module Name: sammax104.exe
    Fault Module Version: 0.0.0.0
    Fault Module Timestamp: 46bb4b70
    Exception Code: c0000005
    Exception Offset: 0035fc40

It's just sam and max though, my other games work just fine.

Oh and that error comes up twice. It's like the game is trying to run twice for some reason.

You could try if a clean boot helps. If it doesn't please post a dxdiag log.

Booting clean in Windows Vista / 7:
    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Selective Startup
    3. Uncheck Load Startup Items
    4. Select the Services tab
    5. Check Hide all Microsoft services
    6. Click Disable all
    7. If running the game on Steam, re-check the "Steam Client Service"
    8. Click on OK
    9. Click Restart.
    10. After reboot, run the game to see if it works.

After performing the necessary steps, restore your system by doing the following:

    1. Click Start --> Type msconfig --> Press Enter
    2. On the General tab, choose Normal Startup
    3. Click Ok
    4. Click Yes, when asked to restart your computer

    dxdiag
Windows XP: Go to your start menu and click on run. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter
Windows Vista / 7: Press the windows key on your keyboard or click on the start menu. Type in "dxdiag" and hit enter.

Now click on the button that says "save all information".
It will prompt you to save a file. Save it where you can find it.

Open the file and press Ctrl+A followed by Ctrl+C to copy the contents, and paste them in a reply by pressing CTRL-V.
Sometimes the Forums spam filter catches long posts like this. Don't worry, we can still see them and make them visible.

Can you try right-clicking the game's executable and then clicking Run As Administrator and see if that helps, please?

Hi, sorry about the late reply. I was abroad so I couldn't test it. Yeah, so tried it with Administrator mode, but still nothing.

Have you tried running in XP compatibility mode?
  • edited January 2012
Yep, still nothing. The only other option s to reinstall Windows, through that's something I don't want to do.

Also I noticed that when I run the .exe, the Windows 7 UAC box comes up asking if I want to run the game. Could this have an effect?

The UAC dialog comes when you have activated "run as administrator".

I don't have any logical solution at the moment, but before you consider reinstalling Windows, there's a couple of other things you could try.

First i would update to the latest Realtek HDA driver.

I would also try unplugging all non-essential USB devices.

If that doesn't change anything, you could try creating another windows user account.
